Affordable neck turning

I've decided to try to get my loads a lil more uniform by neck turning. What's a good bang for the buck neck turner? Something both simple and affordable are the requirements. I load with a single stage rcbs press, and trim with a lyman uni trimmer, so I don't need a setup to do large amounts.

PMA tool is one of the best . Buy once do it right the first time . Look them up give them a call they will help you out. If you go cheap you will pay in the end.

Not to disagree with Outdoorsman at all because I admire him a great deal, but the suggestion to buy quality first is in the long run the cheapest if you intend to stay shooting and reloading for a long time. In my experience both in shooting and life in general, there are definitely times to just look for and find the lowest price on things. For me, in this game as a hobby I intend to do for a long time, I believe and know from my own experience, that this is not a place to consider price as first and most important. The old saying that "the bitterness of poor quality long outlasts the sweetness of low price" is definitely in play here IMHO>
That being said, I will put in a plug for the 21st Century neck turner as a very good value that has quality and features above and beyond many. Best Wishes

Any of the previously mentioned will work fine, I am certain. I do not have experience with any except the 21st Century. If you take your time and slowly work down to the desired thickness, with multiple passes, you will be amazed at the results. Good luck in your endeavor.

I've been using a Forster Neck Turning tool for several years now and am very satisfied. To speed the process I use a Sinclair case holder that I can mount in a cordless screwdriver I bought for $20.

Only neck trimming tool I wouldn't buy (again) is the RCBS tool. Made that mistake early on. Wouldn't be a bad tool if someone made a replacement cutter that didn't look like it was sharpened on a rock.

What are some of the benefits of the 21st century over the others, especially the K&M since I have a K&M gift cert to use?

I've got both the k&m and Sinclair, had great luck with both but I like the expander for the Sinclair better. You see a lot of people talk about the neck turner but a matching expander set is just as important.

If you are loading for factory chambers, I would look around and see if any friends have the equipment, turn a few with theirs, and do some testing to see if your targets show a difference. For factory chambers, it is hard to beat using a collet die in combination with a body die.

Years back, I remember an article in Precision Shooting magazine that pointed out that just because someone buys a bushing die, Wilson seater, and turns his case necks, will not necessarily mean that he will see an improvement in accuracy from a factory rifle.

Along those lines, I tried turned necks for a tuned up Remington 722 in .222 and did not see an improvement at the target. I save my neck turning for rifles that have been barreled with chambers designed for it.

Unless you're planning a career in neck turning you might try "DJ's brass service" a sight contributor. Excellent rep here and at a fraction the cost of equipment investment. Have 50 or so turned and see if you yield an improvement in accuracy.

I have and used for many years a Forster neck turner. The problem with it (don't know if there is a new design) is that it doesn't allow you to cut up into the shoulder a little right at the neck shoulder junction. This matters if you are going to try to avoid donuts in cases that might be prone to that. Don't know if the K&M or others allow this or not...others can verify. Also having the correct matching expander and turning arbor make for much better precision. JMHO

I have a K&M with matching expander mandrel. Works great. Turns the brass down very uniform and very easy to use with either the K&M or Sinclair case holder attached to a cordless screw driver. Easy to adjust as well.

I hear so much about the 21st Century and the PMA tool, but at this point I won't be buying one since the K&M gets the job done easily and to perfection. Certainly at this point I have not cried for not getting one of the other brands.

I buy a K&M for each rifle I neck turn. That way, I do not have to fiddle around finding the right ten thousandths again. BTW - there are some out there that turn only to .001". Do not buy that brand. You will definitely need a turner that goes to .0001".

I have two RCBS neck turning tools, both work great. I broke one cutter and they sent me a new one without question or cost.
Their service is first class.

PMA all the way. They have a caliber specific neck turning option (Model "B"-$64). I bought it for neck turning my 6XC from 22-250 Lapua virgin brass. I called Pat at PMA and he walked me through the thickness options. You indicate the caliber, thickness, and shoulder angle you want on the online order page and they send you the neck turner all set up. I also purchased the case chuck device they offer and love it. Like I said, Pat will walk you through all the options and questions you have about neck turning.

Here's their other neck turning equipment

If your into this sport deep enough that you want to neck turn, I will add one small addition to what tenring said. You need a turner that goes out four places and maintains it through out the run. Checking every few cases gets old fast. BTW, I use the pumkin also and love it.
i hope this helps,

1st off, you are going to have this tool in your hands for many, many hours, so I would forget the "simple and affordable" statement. Find a turner that makes the job easy, fast, and most improtantly, ACCURATE!! I use the Sinclare Phase II setup...I only turn 30 calibers and they are all chambered to .334, so I leave it set and never mess with it. If I ever decide to turn the dasher, I will buy a whole new setup for a 6mm. When I first got it I spent more time fidjiting and adjusting the things than actualy turning necks. Now I just turn necks. Also, good equipment will hold where it is set...checking my measurments every few cases is a ginormas waist of time now. I may check the first couple and last couple, but that is it now.

Also, if you are going to turn necks, you will need an accurate way of measuring neck wall thickness. Get a top of the line ball micrometer. it is the only way to get true measurments.

Good luck,
Tod
