Affordable High Power Rifle?

Yep, stay with the SR. Notwithstanding what Tubb says in his book, the SR is the way to start out. Its a much easier rifle to get the basics down with and get up to speed quickly, not to mention cheaper. The match rifle is must more complicated. When I switched from a SR to a MR, I went from the AR15 to a spacegun. My scores went from HM to EX/MA simply due to getting used to the rifle. Now, they didnt stay there long, as I had the fundamentals, just had to get used to the new sight picture, sights and setting up the rifle...but that still took some time.

And, keep in mind that just because you shoot a MR, doesnt mean you are going to shoot better scores! Thats just not the case. Now, you can shoot better scores with the MR if its a better set up for you. For me, it is. I went from low HM scores to solid HM and better. But, it still takes work, time, practice etc. ANd just because you got a T2k doesnt mean you are going to tear up the course! Dont we all wish that were the case!?

If you decide to go the AR15 route, I can probably help you get the complete lower at a good price (I just happend to have a few connections ;) ) and maybe even on the upper. Email me if you want. Mudcat@charter.net

In any event, quit fartin around with the Fun-Class stuff and get serious and pick up the old sling and iron sighted contraption and really learn how to shoot! You can always go back to belly benchrest when your old and gotta wear diapers cause you cant hold your pee! :P

Service Rifle's the least expensive way to get into HP competition. Being competitive means lots and lots of trigger time, and an attitude that supports not getting wrapped around the equipment axle. Nothing improves scores more than live practice.

Where do you live? Are you close to anywhere where regular HP competitions are held? You'll meet new friends & learn tons of stuff from shooters who come to these events. If the other forum members reading this know where you live, they can offer suggestions for local events.

When I started shooting HP many moons ago I went with a real CHEEP rifle. A 7X57 Mauser with a Lyman receiver site slaped on. After getting a globe front sight and new barrel my scores became respectable, but I never mastered the rapid fire bolt manipulation game. I finally bought a used Bushmaster AR-15 and rapidly improved. I added a match rear sight, free floating hand guard, and better trigger as funds became available. This rifle will still shoot master class scores at reduced course matches if I do my part, even with a 1:9 chrome lined barrel. I am lucky I find the standard A2 stock fits me very well. I now have a White Oak Armament match rifle upper that I use most often. The globe front sight really helps these 60+ year old eyes. Get the best Service Rifle you can afford, improve it as you can aford to, but mainly compete. You will fire a lot of rounds before the rifle starts to hold you back. Good luck.
