ADVISE AND OPINIONS, HAMMER BULLETS, 338 RUM.

Have been pondering trying some to see how they shoot at 600yds plus, my 338 Rum has really shot well with Berger 250gr, and hasn't let me down filling the freezer. Would like to here from some actual results and performance and even any starting load development, was planning on staying between the 236- 250 gr realm.

You are already using the best bullet for the RUM, imho. I do use the 300gr as well, but only for shooting targets beyond 1000. I have no doubt the 300gr would be awesome on game too.

I have experience with the 338 Edge and with Hammer bullets but not the two in combination. Both are superb.

I dont feel like they make a strong match for hunting beyond 600 yards though. The G7 BC on the 223 grain Hammers is 0.253 compared to a G7 of 0.433 for the Berger 300 grain OTM. In the wind at distance, that's like comparing the trajectory of a Dixie cup to a laser beam.

If you were thinking about this for hunting, the min/max wind drift bracket of the hammers might make 600 yards a no-go on game when the confidence in the Berger's was still there.

I shot the 250 Bergers, 250 Accudonds and 236 Hammers from my 338RUM. The Bergers were slightly more accurate at 400yds with the Accubonds coming in slightly behind them. The Hammers didn't group quite as well as the other two.

In the end, I selected the 250 Accubonds for my moose hunting, relying on their well established terminal performance. The bullet performed well on a large bull moose that was shot broadside through the shoulders. The bullet passed through both shoulders and came to rest under the skin. It weighed 140gr after smashing through all that bone.

I took another bull at 315yds, standing broadside. First shot hit him in the crease and he continued to walk slowly as I hit him again. The second shot landed more forward but he dropped. Both bullets expanded and exited. It appears that the first shot was fatal, but I didn't want to take a chance.

The Berger may have a better BC but it wouldn't have out-performed the Accubonds on the 3 bulls that I've take with it. I have no experience with the .338 Hammers on game. The .264 Hammers perform very well on whitetails.
