Advice on what lathe to buy

The Goodway is an excellent lathe, but is too long in the headstock to chamber that way. It also has D1-5 chuck set up that is very heavy.

Butch are you saying it's absolutely impossible to chamber through the headstock with this lathe or for that matter any lathe that has too long of headstock? And is the D1-5 set up a problem or are you just saying it's heavy?

I am thinking I should save my change for another year and find something like a Clausing Colchester or something similar around the 5000 mark. I am in no hurry to jump spend money just to wish I had something just a little different. Spend a little more time researching and learning thanks for all the input.

The D1-5 is very heavy, but it is rigid. People have jury rigged things to go in the spindle for barrels that are shorter than the headstock. I haven't seen one that I really feel is accurate. Certainly not saying that it can't be done.

Do you feel the same way about something like this? How about the "true bore alignment system"something

Boltman,
That looks like somebodies version of an action truing fixture. Does it fit in a 4 jaw? If so wouldn't you need a substantial 4 jaw to support it? It wouldn't allow me to chamber the way I do.

Oh ok, I see. Thanks. It will fit in a 6" 4 jaw

In one of those Viper Youtubes Bob Pastor chambers a barrel in a fixture like that he sells. Looked like another way to skin a cat for a long headstock. Seems like Bob knows what he is doing.

Yep, another way to skin a cat and that picture I posted is of bob pastors design, now sold at brownells. I'd hate to see somebody get deterred from buying a great lathe that will work just fine and be more versatile because of what one person said or didnt explain in enough detail.

Did I or somebody not explain enough? Bob Pastor is good, but the picture of the tool has no dimensions. How long is it and how long are your chuck jaws that are handling it?
My 6 1/4 Bison only has about 3/4" of the chuck jaw that would hold it. I don't want the muzzle hanging out that far unsupported.
Remember that this is my opinion.

Machining basics: Think of how far you are supposed to hang a piece off the chuck and how far you would have to hold it from the chuck with this fixture.
It would work, but certainly not the best way.
