advice on target camera system

fellow shooters,
I have just moved out to 600 yds, I now realize how hard
this is to do alone. I am asking for your recomendations
on brands and if any one has had any bad experiences with
any model.I need some direction as to where to look for a range
camera. thanks in advance for any help.

There was also a long thread on range video systems on here, or the Benchrest.com forums that had a number of do it yourself systems detailed.

Here is another system. I saw this system at the NRA Convention/Show in Houston this summer and it looks like a good system.

The links provided here should get you where you want to go on this subject so I'll focus on one thing that is all too often overlooked with target camera systems.
Whether it's an "oops" touch of the trigger, unexpected wind or some other factor, your target camera is vulnerable. :'( You might find it useful to devise a heavy plate or other protective shield for the camera you eventually decide on.

+1 if you use it on a public Range.

My system is protected by a 3/8" steel plate at roughly 45 degrees just "incase".....many of us here have built our own do a search.

Every time I look at the possibilities of video target systems I cringe when I see the prices. Finding a wireless system that will handle 600 yards (nearly 1/3 mile) that won't break the bank has been impossible. I've looked at home security wireless but all I've read about have some very limited range.
If you want to read some of the technical stuff, take a look at this:
http://www.brickhousesecurity.com/category/about+articles/about+wireless+video+cameras.do
Even though "wireless" devices usually require a transformer connected to a duplex outlet for power, a simple adapter can be made for a 12 volt automotive battery to power these kinds of devices or even to power those which may be battery powered but use smaller alkaline or similar battery power packs.
Good luck .........................

I had $150 in my first system......transmitter/receiver, my Cannon powershot camera, 12 volt TV from my old camper, garden tractor battery and inverter for transmitter/camera. The cords, plywood and steel plate were already in my inventory, it was as easy as hooking up a vcr and saved a bunch of trips back and forth during practice.

HI Bill,

There are some good recommendations here already. An alternative would be to build your own.
It's not difficult. If I can do it, anyone can. Bear in mind, there is a limit on how far the video signal
will transmit.
This is mainly dependent on the antenna. I built my system using many of the components that come
with the one's already for sale as a complete unit. I did however beef up the antenna and it transmits
out to 1.5 miles (if you have the need).
In any case, here's a video I put together. It lists all the components used. Where I purchased them
from. And, footage of the target cam at various distances.
Good luck on your endeavor.

Thanks for the video link MD. My system will only receive clearly to about 875 yards now, looks like a new antenna for my system is in order.
