Advice on simple rifle (truck gun)

So I'm looking for just a simple bolt gun. 30-06 iron sights preferably peep sight . Nothing fancy , something that can live in my truck on the farm . Kinda a hog / whatever needs shootin gun . Mauser ? Not many rifles come with iron sights these days

If you're looking for a new rifle, you might consider a CZ 557 in -06. It's a little shorter carbine length which would work a little better for a truck gun. I have two CZs, one in .17 HMR and one in .416 Rigby, sort of opposite ends of the spectrum and I like them both.

Find a Rem. 78 sportsman, a basic no frills 700, 22" barrel, blind magazine, walker style trigger and iron sights. I'm sure you could find an aftermarket peep sight. I had one in 270 for years and it served me well

Find you an old savage 110. I have one in 243 that has the same use. Those guns are ugly but will serve you great. Almost like they were made as truck guns!

Kudos to earlcurtis67. Rem700? Every custom out there is a clone. Peep sights? A competent smith should have that done for you. 700 long action standard boldfaces should be pretty easy to come by. I never should have read this, now I want one.

Finally, my gun that fills this role is a 1917 Eddystone, and it will shoot under a minute with privy partizan all day. At least for me, it will.

God bless America,

The old Rem 742 semi-auto 30-06,

I would recommend a synthetic stock, no problems with humidity or warping.

Scarface, I have the original birch stock and the 22" 270 barrel to start a project ;))

I forgot all about the savage hot hunter .... I'd take a auto for the right price

I agree with the SKS. I bought mine 25 years ago (Chinese copy) for an "emergency weapon" and after shooting one deer with it, forgot about it.
Joined a club that shot vintage silhouette and it was the only gun I had legal for it.

Damn thing will hit rams at 500yd! and with wolf ammo! Problem is it won't knock them over! But it is remarkably accurate with iron sights. Never shot worth a darn with a receiver mounted 4X scope!

I have a couple truck guns. A custom 7x57 Mauser on a interarms Mark X action with a 20" barrel and hogue overmold stock. The other one is a Remington 600 Mohawk with a 14 twist 6BR 20" barrel for the little stuff.
