Advice on annealing and carbon in the neck

Thanks Tom no mention of me, you at least called once and a while. When the prizes are on the table I still shoot fairly well. I'm telling all my secrets, cause I'm getting old and hope someone will listen! My phone number hasn't changed.

Tom I'd just love to have a couple good days like you guys get in Montana! Alex has E-Mailed me about a few things, you better be on your toes next year he may have a good combination. When it gets windy the dashers better watch out. I'm still learning about this annealing myself. I'm trying not to anneal as hard as when I first started.

I'm glad that so many have shared their insights. My basic question about annealing without cleaning the neck seems to have been well answered and I'm ALWAYS willing to gain knowledge from those with more experience/talents than me (of which there are many on this forum).

Just a follow up. On several different occasions (including yesterday based upon some comments on this thread) I've tested "neck tension" with varying sized bushings with this load and keep coming back to 0.003 "neck tension" (I tried 0.001-0.005 in 0.001 increments). It was suggested to me in a private PM that I try soft seating them. Even with less than 0.001 tension (about 0.0005-0.001), bullet only moved 0.004 into case when seated 0.030 longer than hard jam. I'm guessing that this means I should try to get less "neck tension" to achieve soft seating, right? (any hints besides more neck turning) I did shoot 2 groups of 10 with this attempt at soft seating (<0.001 NT) at 600 today and vertical was more the 6" on both (didn't even have the heart to measure).

I did get 2 of them to spin freely and shot those 2 and they grouped well but again only 2.

Skiutah02 There you just answered your own question, 0.003 neck tension is where you want to be with that rifle. If you are annealing try it every other time, see what happens, then every time. Try not to cook them too much like I first did. More is not alway better. You will know if you start getting dents when they hit the side of the action or land on something hard! If you are going to try soft seating play with seating depth, by going the other way.
Donovan I'd just like one day like they have in Montana, All I get is 10-20 mph.
Tom I'd love to have you make it to our range, you probably wouldn't waste the ammo.
