Advice needed *update*

Hi all, I’m in need of some advice.
Recently I brought a REM 700 action(supposedly trued) and a shilen barrel to a gunsmith to be chambered and installed.
The gunsmith chambered and installed the barrel, but now is saying that the fired brass won’t rechamber.
Is this a bad chamber, or a bolt face out of square?
This thing has been a nightmare from the start and now I’m not quite sure where to go.
Next time, I think I’ll just get a tikka

Thanks
Tyler
Where did the Rem action come from?

So I got the rifle back, and bought a box of ammo to sight it in (150gr Winchester PowerPoint) First three bullets went off, followed by three that failed to fire.
Very light marks on all the primers. Fired brass is very tight to go back in.
Difference in shoulder of fired brass to factory is 10 thousandths.
Firing pin protrusion is 50 thousandths.
Firing pin spring looks clean.
Gunsmith doesn’t know what kind of chamber reamer he has.
Thinking this might just be a learning experience.
So the smith says he rechambered??? Sounds to me like he just moved the reamer forward a few thousandths to fix the mistake he made previously. Now you have a chamber that long by 10 thousandths. This is why your hit and miss now with primer ignition. Virgin brass is usually shorter in headspace but you should still be hitting primers consistently. Did you already pay this clown? I would not even send it back for his repair. Force your hand and get your money back and resend to someone more competent. Its going to have to be "completely" rechambered. A competent smith can also evaluate the bolt as well. Check the extractor on the bolt. Not so sure its the action or bolt however.

Thanks for the replies. Think I’ll go elsewhere with my business from now on.
Action was used from a Canadian gun forum, previous owner fired it with no issues.
This gunsmith was willing to reprofile my barrel, and he’s closer than another reputable smith.

If brass fired in a rifle won't chamber in the same rifle without sizing, there is an issue with the chamber (usually oval due to runout at the throat when chambering). I don't know what he did in his efforts to remedy that issue but it sound like he then produced excess headspace. In addition, if the fired brass is still tight to go back in, the original issue is still somewhat present. At this point, I would say the barrel would have to be set back at least a half inch to clean up.
I don't think your bolt is not square, at least not enough to cause the issue. The problem is with the fitting and chambering
Are you in Canada, and if so, where? WH

I feel for you brother. I really do. I'm sure that is very frustrating.

Ps: One of the reasons I like the nut barrels. No headspace issues.

I'm two days due west (one very long day), so I don't reckon you can bring it by for a quick look! I don't do shipping anymore. It sounds fixable, but not without a setback. WH

If the brass fits fine after sizing do some load development, it may be a non issue.

Thanks sir, there’s a guy in Brandon who’s does good work. Chamber and Cerakote for 250. Maybe I’ll pay him a visit

I knew there would be more to this story - it’s the gift that keeps on giving. My internal warning system goes off with three odd occurrences. The original issue and that it was communicated without a solution was odd, not doing the most basic evaluation of the action was odd. Everything after that meets the expectation that all is not right behind the scenes. Even good guys have bad days, so hopefully it’s going to be an easy fix on an otherwise good barrel job.

However, ongoing poor judgement has likely caused more than a simple headspace issue and it seems he has a screw loose, had a mini stroke, suffers from long Covid, wife left, hasn‘t found the bottom of the bottle, or junior high kids are selling him oxi from their grandmother’s medicine cabinet. Hopefully his skill in threading and measuring is better than his chambering, but I wouldn’t fire the gun until it’s looked at by someone else - it’s easy to miss a number on the threading dial if your head isn’t straight.

Thanks for the advice, don’t want to badmouth anyone on a public forum, but I’ll have it checked out by someone else.
