Adjusting for Wind w/o Hash Marks?

From what I can see, many target shooters use a simple fine crosshair for a scope reticle. If the shot is off from the X by some distance, how can you tell how far to adjust if you have no hash marks in the scope to measure it? Maybe the targets have known sizes for the circles and one can calculate scope adjustments using that, but I don't know. I need a good quality scope for 100 and 200 yard paper target shooting, and not sure on best reticle for this use.

Usually folks with crosshairs just dial in when they want to be....
The NF has a lot more options as far as reticules....
Lots of folks use the NF-NP2-DD and shoot very well with them...

go with sightron 10-50x60, or nightforce 12-42x56. cant go wrong.

Nightforce too costly. What reticle for the Sightron...there is more than one. Mildot, MOA, Target Dot, and Fine Crosshair.

How do you know far off a shot is unless you have a ruler (MOA or Mildot) in the reticle? Unless you know the distance between point of impact and point of aim, you can't make accurate turret adjustments. With the "ruler" in the reticle, I would be guessing at the distance and making the adjustment, and then make continued adjustments as additional shots crept closer to the X. I must be missing something here.

At 100 and 200 yards it is pretty easy to have a good idea where your shots are landing, and it shouldn't take to much effort to dial into what is needed with out needing a ruler...
If you shoot enough you'll have a good idea how far to dial in the turret so you'll hit exactly where you want to...
Depending on the caliber, a bullet hole will give you a pretty good idea of just how far you'll need to be moving the turret...

For F-class you can use plot sheets and plot the shot impact and calculate the correction using the grid on the sheet. Eventually as you get more experienced with this kind of shooting you don't really need the grid all the time - but it still helps.

For other types of shooting (tactical) you can find plot sheets to put in a data book. You can write down the appropriate measurements, etc. and correct off that.

For known range target shooting my opinion is the less clutter the better. Doesn't take long at all for you to figure out what each target ring is equal to MOA wise (use plot sheets mentioned above to start) and you can adjust from that. I'm using Sightron SIII with target dot (TD). Liked the long range target dot (LRTD) too but it was just a little to small and cross hairs a little fine for me.

Before deciding on reticle I would recommend looking at targets with it at distance. Probably just my old eyes but didn't feel like I could see smaller dot on the LRTD well enough when holding dead center X. Not saying one of these is better for you than the other just that you need to actually look through one before making decision. Seeing diagram of what they look like on a computer screen doesn't give you enough information to make informed decision.

Targets used in known-distance competitions have standard sized rings for that discipline. Either consult the rulebooks or get the plotsheets which may be online for the ring sizes.
