Adjustable rests

Doc told me that I should shoot in as near upright, (spine and neck erect) position as I could to prevent more neck and spine injury.

I've no experience with rests as such, having always used bags in some motley assortment. I've looked at the ads for Caldwell rests and some others and can see where recoil certainly would be abated, and I can afford a portable shooting bench (probably would need leg extensions) and the seat could be set up at the proper height, but the rest solution eludes me.

Since I'm not a benchrest shooter I would like to avoid the mechanical marvels that are produced for that part of the sport (too costly) and stick with the more commonplace rests.
Any input will be appreciated.

One thing that would help you achieve your goal is to have some sort of adjustable stool. This is because it is the distance between the top of the bench, and the top of what you are sitting on that is the ultimate determiner of how vertical your posture is. The other variable is the height of your rear bag. If your stool is adjusted so that when you are sitting erect that a rifle's butt is in the correct position on your shoulder, you are in business. Of course you will need for your front rest to be the correct height that you are aiming at the target. with some benchrest stocks, that have short butts, if you are shooting on a range that is even slightly downhill, the major problem is getting the front rest low enough. Looking at some rests, I think that this would be a problem. On the other hand, with most common hunting stocks, this is less of an issue.
