Adjustable cheek rest?

What is the function of adjustable cheek rests? How useful are they in long range prone, and bench shooting w/ scope? How do "you" use yours?

the more comfortable you are shooting the more consistent your gonna be
if you have a large objective scope they make it easier to be comfortable.

Which one is the more comfortable? The integral or saddle type? Are the saddle types metal? Or plastic? I ask because it gets chilly here in winter.

Anything that helps a shooter (prone or bench) acheive a comfortable, repeatable "cheek-weld" will go a long way towards improving scores if properly used.

Rear sight height adjustment is frequently done with match sights in long range prone; day to day minor variations can be easily accommodated, while moving from yardline to yardline will require sight adjustments too. Where optics are used a change in mounting height can be used to fine tune the fit of a rifle to the shooter's preference.

In all cases, and when making subtle changes to one's prone position on a mat on the ground, an adjustable cheek rest is very helpful to ensure one can get exactly the right head position / cheek weld relative to the rear sight.

As for metal, plastic or wood: the latter's certainly the traditional choice but the former's seeing more use with "tube" style stocks. Plastic's not too common but I have seen a few. Most folks cover metal or plastic with something; some kind of durable foam perhaps, I like white 'loop' self-adhesive Velcro (great if I haven't shaved for a few days!), one National Champion rubber-bands handkercheifs / bandanna fabric to his cheek rest.

I have both an integral(bell n Carlson a5) and a plastic one you actually drill 2 holes into the butt of your stock to install. of course fit and finish is always going to be nicer with the integral but I have to say the plastic one is very comfortable and effective. I bet with companies like Savage using the nice accustocks that shoot as well as they do you're gonna start seeing more people opt for the do it yourself approach and put the saved money into optics. At least with composite stocks.

If you're worried about the cold, grow a beard :P or perhaps some "moleskin". they make sheets of this for bow rests. The kerchief idea is probably a good one too with no cost involved.

First of all, I commend you for having the motivation for shooting in the Alaskan 'chill'.
I shoot conventional Long Range w/ irons and optics. Personally I only use a thumb wheel (threaded stud/wheel) type adjuster because it can be adjusted while still shooting a match while you are in position. My position changes slightly during a match (coat settling, etc.) and I probably adjust my cheek position at least once during a Long Range match.
If your stock is wood or laminated you can install one yourself if you are handy. They are available from Warner Tool or Master Class Stocks. If your stock is composite, it can be cut, filled and then inletted for the hardware.
The tunnel type is cheaper, easier to install but pushes ones eye further aside from the optical center of ones sight/scope I feel.
Keep up the good shooting up North. ONe day I feel I must come and try it for myself. Does Northern Outfitters make a shooting jacket?

The real purpose of the adjustable cheek piece is so the you will be able to get aiming eye directly in the center of the iris on the rear sight or of the ocular of the scope!

I haven't purchased a stock as of yet, I am still in the "what do I want" stage. With all the options, and styles to choose from the decision is a tough one. As to shooting in chilly weather, I usually give up when the snow berms reach the top of the bench ::) as to my "shooting jacket" when the temp drops, Filson double Mackinaw wool coat! I am even known to take a small propane heater to help worm the fingers, but haven't done that in a while. Thanks for all the great info guys, now I just have to figure out what design to go with ;D
