Actions

Is a Rem 700 action good to build a 6br on? I was told a 6br is hard to feed from a magazine. My gunsmith told me to go to a single stack magazine in order to work properly. I haven't been able to find a single stack magazine, any suggestions?

What do you think of Rem actions for a build?

If you use an unmodified action, the Remington will save quite a bit of money. But if you're going to have the Remington action trued, and can't do the machine work yourself, then the cost difference of a custom action is fairly small and the retained value is much higher. Even for hunting rifles I use Jewell triggers, so there's no cost savings for me in starting with a Remington action.

Personally, I'd rather have fewer rifles and more barrels, so I use custom actions. My new 22BR coyote rifle built on a Kelbly Atlas action ($1050) can have everything from a 20BR to a .284 Win barrel screwed on, which covers a lot of hunting needs. With the CDI bottom metal and AICS magazine it feeds the 22BR rounds like a champ. The fixed (TG) ejector eliminates the ejection issues that you can have with plunger/spring ejectors.

They feed fine from a standard internal mag. However, ejection can be a problem. In mine the cartridges would come off the extractor prior to clearing the ejection port and end up laying in the action. Not always, but enough to make me sell it. The cartridge is too short and without cutting the ejection port forward a bit, you may have the same problem. Shot lights out though.

I had the same issue as MGYSGT. Someone on this forum posted about curing the issue by cutting the slot on the ejector to allow it advance forward a small amount. That made mine work and it now holds the case until it clears the ejection port. Thank goodness for this forum, I've learned a lot and been saved many a headache! Just an idea that may help you.
