Action Recommendation For 6PPC Hunting Rifle

swd - What twist is the barrel on your 6x45 that enables you to shoot the 95gr bullets?

I've located a Sako 75 6ppc with a 1:12" twist and wonder how it would do with the 80-90gr bullets.

I think that 1:12 is too slow with the 90-Ish bullets. I shoot a 1:10 on a 6: BR for the 80-95 grain bullets.

I built it about 6 years ago on a Sako L461. If I recall it's an odd one, 1-11". I had another 6x45 with a 1-8" set up to shoot 95 SMK's. It was really fun out to 700-800 yards. The guy I sold it to shoots 70 grainers out of it into little bug holes. So don't be afraid to go with a faster twist for some versatility.

Look carefully at the twist rate needed for the bullets that you want to shoot.

I shoot a lot of the Berger 90 gr BT. They now list 1:9 as optimal. I get away with 1:10 in my situation. I'd be disinclined to spend my hard-earned cash on trying a 1:12.

Yeah 1 in 12 is definitely too slow for 90's. I have a 6mm Remmy with a 1 in 11" barrel and it can barely stabilize 87gr V-Max bullets. Get an oblong hole in the target every third or fourth round and wont shoot them good with any load.

So I shoot 75gr Sierra bullets out of it. That's about max weight for really good accuracy in my 1 in 11 twist.

Is there any reason why you would not want to use the new Dasher brass for better feeding and a little more velocity with the 105s?

What about that new howa mini? Get one for a Grendel or 7.62x39 and rebarrel...I'm thinking about getting one for just that...

I had the same idea, but not with a PPC. I bought a Cooper single shot in 6BR with 8 twist. Loaded it with 105 gr. Hornadys, and will hunt deer with it this fall. It Shot well on paper at 100 yds.

That twist rate might work for the 85ish bullets, probably have better luck with a 85g gameking/varminter over say a Berger vld but the little Sako action should be pretty slick. Is it a single shot or repeater?

If you hadn't of found that I was going to recomend looking for a Rem model 7 for a repeater and an XR-100 for single shot if you could find one.

I've toyed with this idea for years... Planning to build a lightweight single shot hunting rifle in 6mm PPC (Lapua no-turn) and would appreciate recommendations for the action. There seems to be some advantages to going with a Rem 700 footprint action. Currently the top candidate is the Defiance Rebel or Deviant Hunter action but not sure of other viable options. Most likely will go with a McMillian Edge stock or perhaps one by Oregunsmithing; in some shade of green. Barrel - torn between a Lilja 3-groove or a Bartlein or Krieger cut rifled. Planning to go 1:12" so I can use Nosler 85gr Partition or one of the Barnes 80-85gr bullets for deer. Should be a great little walking rifle for varmint to deer.

What say ye?
I put together a "SWEET" 6PPC rifle, Stiller Predator action with a 24" Pac-Nor #5 contour fluted barrel(10-twist), H-S Precision stock and a Jewell trigger. I'm shooting 70-grain Speer TNT bullets now over H322 powder and Norma 6PPC USA Brass. It shoots very very well...

Pierce actions are great, Put one together for a customer in 6x47 with a Bartlein 7 twist. Groups 4" five shots at 1250 yds regularly. About 3" at 1000yds. Cant beat Kelbly Atlas Tactical actions either. Seeing similar results at 1000yds. with their actions and Kreiger 8 Twist. HS precision or Mc or Manners which ever suits your budget.

I built my 6x45s with both 1/10" & 1/9" twists. They will both run 55-95g bullets very accurately with ease. The 1/9" being a tad better. I sold the 1/10" bbls and just run the 1/9" the now.
