Action Recommendation For 6PPC Hunting Rifle

I've toyed with this idea for years... Planning to build a lightweight single shot hunting rifle in 6mm PPC (Lapua no-turn) and would appreciate recommendations for the action. There seems to be some advantages to going with a Rem 700 footprint action. Currently the top candidate is the Defiance Rebel or Deviant Hunter action but not sure of other viable options. Most likely will go with a McMillian Edge stock or perhaps one by Oregunsmithing; in some shade of green. Barrel - torn between a Lilja 3-groove or a Bartlein or Krieger cut rifled. Planning to go 1:12" so I can use Nosler 85gr Partition or one of the Barnes 80-85gr bullets for deer. Should be a great little walking rifle for varmint to deer.

I just finished building a custom with a Pierce single shot RB/LP and have shot it now about 30 times. I like it very much and it is much better than I expected for smoothness and overall design. The people at Pierce are also great to work with.

If you want to shoot the 85-ish bullets, go with a 10 twist 6 BR. Make sure that the reamer used has appropriate freebore for the bullets that you want to use.

I also would vote for the BR over the PPC. Give some thought to the twist. If you ever wanted to ring some steel way out there, an 8" would let you do that and not disadvantage you very much with bullets in the 70 Grain class.

Alan,,,I have just what you are planning ,,,its a 6mm BR with a 8 twist Krieger #4 bbl,,,McMillan classic hunting style stock,,,using a Kodiak action (Jewell top safety trigger),,with a magazine and they feed and function perfectly,,,,the 8 twist bbl lets you use 100 gr Sierra SBT and as small as 62-68gr botiqued benchrest bullets ,,,Roger

Btw, that Edge stock is a good Benchrest stock, but would be horrible in another application.

Go with the 6.5 Grendle with 100-120 gr NBTs. 18"-22" barrel ...it'd be a nice light and more capable combo. Edited to remove the CZ part, re-read the OP and saw it was for a SS.

Lapua does not offer 6 PPC brass. You would have to fireform .220 Russian. There are probably more PPC chamber variations than any other cartridge , and getting a good an off- the -shelf die match up will be hit or miss unless your smith does his homework.
6 BR is what you want for what you want to do. Stamping the barrel "6 PPC" does not guarantee accuracy.
I'd vote for a Kelbly or Borden action ----they have been around a long time and being a family business will likely be around should the need arise for service.....unlike some others who hype their products ...then end up somewhere else under different product name.

With that said, Norma does make good 6 PPC brass. There are reamers out there for it.

Can you tell me a little more about your magazine set up. I'm building a 6 Dasher on a Kodiak also and hoping I could get it to feed. What magazine box and follower did you use ADL or BDL style? Is your bolt a flat or cone faced bolt ?

Looks like we're just kicking a can down the road so I'll add my two cents. I wanted a light weight hunting rifle with some punch and built a 7BR on a worked over 700 action with a Shilen match grade barrel in something of a heavier sporter. Using a Timney trigger and left it in the factory stock. The barrel is a 22 inch with a nine twist and I'm using 139 SSTs'. Accuracy is superb and velocity is somewhere around 2700. This works great on South Texas deer and hogs and have done one shot kills on 300 pound hogs. It's also a real pleasure to shoot and works through the action just fine.

My .02, Pierce single action RBRP, Muller or Brux 1-10 #3 contour, 6BR. If the 6BR doesn't work out there are other calibers that will work with that bolt face and barrel.

6.5x47 Lapua necked up to 7mm. Tikka T3 in a Manners stock with bommtom metal using AI mags. I can run from 110 to 168 VLDs at mag length.

I have a 6br, a 6 dasher and a 30 br all built on Sako 75 III actions, they feed flawlessly and shoot well under a half inch. I also have a Sako 6ppc factory sportier. After reading your post I immediately thought of Mike Bryant out of Texas, a first rate gunsmith with lots of experience with short fat cartridges. He retired but is now working part time. You may have that covered already but I thought I'd mention it. My 6br is my favorite out ones mentioned, easy to shoot, easy to load and hits harder than one would think. I have Hawk Hill number 3, 1/8 twist shooting 105 Berger VLDs.

A 6PPC would make a great little deer/varmint rifle. I shoot a 6x45 and have killed a few deer with it. The 85 Partitions work ok but the 95 Partitions at a boring 2650fps work GREAT. I say do it and you'll have a blast with it.

Yeah I think the 6 PPC is a little on the lighter side for big game hunting. Just can't push the bigger pills very fast. It would work, but the effective range for proper bullet terminal performance would be limited. I definitely support the ideas of going with something in the size of a 6BR or bigger. At least then you could reach out a little further if need be and could still build the rifle on a nice lightweight short action.

I just built a 6XC hunting rifle with a 22" custom barrel on a Sako action. Will push 105gr well over 2900 fps with the right powder. Haven't shot anything with it yet, but I'm sure it will be more than adequate for deer and antelope and anything under or in between

swd - What twist is the barrel on your 6x45 that enables you to shoot the 95gr bullets?

I've located a Sako 75 6ppc with a 1:12" twist and wonder how it would do with the 80-90gr bullets.
