Many gunsmiths recommend using an action with a larger diameter bolt than a 700 for the 338 lapua. Its tempting to use a 700 and save some cash i know but I wouldnt do it and if i thought it would be okay thats exactly what i would do. You may want to look into it a bit more. I dont think the ptg bolt you speak of is larger than standard dia is it? To me the biggest cartridges I would use with a 700 are the RUMs. Hopefully the OP gets a custom action for his 338 lapua.I'm in the same boat! What's your goal? I'm going to build off a Rem 700 long action with a PTG bolt with .338 Lapua bolt face.

I am poor to so Id like to make one out of a reasonable priced action, but I wouldnt build one on a Rem 700 especially since there are so many alternatives that are suitable for the caliber. Its just a bigger cartridge than i personally want to shoot in a 700.Why does Remington make the MLR, Police, and XCR in .338 Lapua? Aren't they just regular Rem 700 actions?
PTG makes a .338 Lapua bolt face for the Rem 700.
I might go custom now or use my receiver for a .300 win mag or something.
OP Stiller TAC 338 is nice I'm just poor![]()
I believe they throat it out with a lot of free bore to reduce velocity and pressure. As a side note you can do a 338 Ultra IMP or 338 Edge. You get as much velocity or more. The only downside is the brass is not as tough. We actually got 3000 FPS WITH the 338 IMP and a 300 Berger. Pretty good accuracy also. No I haven't tried it. The gun is my buddies. He shot a deer at 1869 yards, this year with it. I shoot a 338 Lapua IMP. I was thinking of doing a 338-416 Rigby IMP. I watched Eddie test his. He got 3300 with a 300 Sierra and RE 50. It shot about 5 inches at 1000,which at that speed which I think is great. It was flat shooting. I am thinking it was about 12 or 13 minutes. But it is a 100 pound aluminum stocked heavy gun with a 46 inch long, 2 inch diameter barrel. It takes me 20 1/4 minutes to get on at 1000. MattMatt,
Have you tried the Bertrom Edge brass that Shon sells? I have 100 pieces sitting on the shelf waiting to go into service.....just waiting for that 50 pieces of crappy REM brass to give up the ghost.I'm on my 6th firing on the Rem stuff now....still going strong(ish). The Bertrom is suppose to be far superior to REM brass and as good as the 338 Lapua brass.
