Action opinions?

What are the advantages/disadvantages of using a Savage Model 12 action over a Rem 700 ? Also how much would I regret using a Stevens 200 action to build a .223 with a 1in7 twist for F/TR ?

Thanks

My advantage over the Rem 700...I can go down to my man cave...set up the vise...grab the nut & action wrench and do myself....
I have several Savage 12 solid bottom s/shot set ups...but the cat's meow is the Savage Target action...if target/varmint is your goal...
A repeater Savage or Stevens may be what you are interested in...just be advised the Stevens CM action & barrel are installed by Savage Gorillas....plan on an overnight soak in Kroil & the wife's hairdryer to get 'em apart...SS barrelled actions come apart much easier..

There are more stocks and triggers available for the Remington 700 action than for a Savage action. Both actions can have a barrel nut or a shouldered barrel depending on what you choose. The floating head on the Savage bolt seems to work very well and allows changing bolt faces easily. New bolts that can be carefully fit are available for both actions.

I messed with a Savage Model 12 BVSS for a while but finally switched to Remington because of trigger and stock availability. Today, the problem is not as great as it was when I tried it.

Both actions can be made to shoot very well. Did you see the pictures from the Savage that Rusty Stud setup? And there are lots of Remington 700's that shoot very well. Make your choice and go shooting!

I have built guns on the Savage Target Action, Model 12, and Stevens 200. All work well. Great triggers are available from several companies.
You can get any style stock your want. You can screw on any barrel combination you like. I have .204, 22BR, 223, 243, 6BR, 6.5X47 lapua, and .284 Shehane.

Did I say I like Savage?

I agree with the above, you just have to look a little harder.

I shoot both actions, all T&T'd, Savage IMO is easier to assemble and change barrels, avg 10 minutes and that's taking your time!

I don't have any experience on the Savage target action but I've done quite a few standard actions, both long and short and after working with mauser actions the savage action is a snap. I'll just throw this out there cause I know it will get a response or two but the floating bolt head has it's good and bad points. If the bolt lugs aren't cut quite straight/square then the bolt head will adjust. This however, might make the bolt face askew. I usually square up the receiver face on the lathe, use a spring loaded bolt pushing device to lap in the lugs for more contact surface, then use the .308 bolt face cutter from PTG to square the bolt face. It will usually need some cleaning up. I feel this really helps put the bolt face and the base of the cartridge case in total contact. I'm not a gunsmith (hobbyist), but I built some extremely accurate Savage rifles. Hope this helps a little on your decision.

With the savage actions can they be converted from a .223 to a .308 or 6mmBR? I am looking to put together a .223 with a 1 in 7 twist single shot for some FTR , but if I wanted to switch up to a 308 or 6mm? down the road can it be done? I though I have heard that you can by changing the bolt face and of course the barrel. Also what calibers use the same bolt face as the .223?

Thanks

You can change bolt heads or bolts.
.223 Bolt head also, .204, 20 Tactical, .221 Fireball, 20 VARTARG, .17 Mach 4, old 6X47, 6X45, etc.
Standard Bolt head, .308, 6 BR...

If using the Stevens or savage actions , is there a preferred way to do barrel installations? Is it better to use the barrel nut or have the smith do it without the barrel nut.

Thanks

is there a stock you all would recommend for these actions that would work good for F/TR?

Thanks

The Savage F-Class stock is one option. There are many others,

Most of my Savage/Stevens rifles have a barrel nut. I Like the ease of installation. My .284 Shehane was built nutless because the gunsmith wanted to do it that way. I know of no difference in accuracy.

You forgot all Hornet based rounds. PTG now makes a Hornet bolt head.

You can change bolt heads or bolts.

Do you think there is any accuracy gained by going to the model 12 action over the Stevens 200? Is the extra stiffness worth the extra money ?

The short answer is yes.

The long answer is it depends on your intended use.

Is this still a discussion of F-Class?

Yes it will be used for F/TR.

It will see some bench time but that will be just for fun and trigger time.

Here is friends 223 in a savage action (sans nut) he uses for FTR
