action for 6.5-284

Will the 139-142 gr. bullets seated long enough for the heel of the bullet to stay above the shoulder of the case still cycle through the magazine of a Remington short action?

Gunamonth is right. To take advantage of the good long 6.5 bullets, you definitely need a long action. You don't want to deep seat the bullets and loose your powder capacity. You might as well shoot a 6.5x308 or 260.

Even a .260 won't eject from a short action with a 142 SMK seated long - it's well over the COL for a magazine-length .308. I have a Mauser-based rifle in .284,originally 7x57) that's a mid-length; it allows a COL of 3.10" to feed from the magazine, which is perfect for the .284. That would work just as well for a 6.5-.284.
