Action choices????

If you were building a short actioned rifle for hunting, med. wt. bbl, in a 6BR, 6.5x47 Lapua, or 260 Rem?

Will a Winchester 70 classic action or L579 action feed a BR case? I know a Model 7 will.

How much accuracy can one get in that Winchester action or L579, as compared to a custom?

If custom, would you build a repeater, or single shot? What trigger would you use and brand barrel?

Thanks, and I appreciate all feedback/replies.

I think the 6br or 6.5x47 don't offer any advantages for hunting. A 243 or 260 give more velocity and more positive feeding and ejection.

Easy; .260 Rem... Repeater... Cartridge will feed from any receiver mag well that is set up for a .308 based cartridge. Sako, Winchester, Remington, or? Consider a 7mm-08, too.

Enjoy, Tom

260rem! I see no advantage on a hunting rifle of the 6,5x47Lapua over the 260rem. And the 6BR is not easy on feeding.

I would opt for a repeater, built on a Rem 700 action stainless steel. But a Sako or a Winchester 70 would be good choices too.
The Rem700 is easy to work, true, square etc) and the accuracy on a custom barrel will be very good.
I would keep a Rem trigger, not the new one) and put it on 2lbs weight.

Have a 7BR that feeds like glass on a model 7, and ran some 6BR ammo, did the same.

Heard the x47 Lapua feeds well and I like the fact that with the slightly shorter case, you don't eat up powder space to keep bullets under max oal for action. As to 708, nothing wrong with it, but it's more than I need, have 3 now, rather less recoil, and as to the 243, it eats barrels faster, have one now, like it fine, but I am wanting a super accurate light recoiling rifle to shoot paper thru deer, and if a 6.5 would not hesitate to carry after elk w/proper bullets if/when I get the chance again.

As to Rem actions, own several now, but I had a custom 338/06 years back on a new stainless action, the bolt handle FELL off on the first shot after I came back from an elk hunt. Had I taken that shot on an elk, that would have been the ONLY shot I would have had, SO, I was burned on Rem and hard to consider using another for a gun that I plan to use for a majority of my field use.

Stiller, like the actions, but honestly, the brazed handle is shying me from them. Like to keep things simple, and prefer a one piece bolt handle. I simply NEVER want to have happen again what did with my 700, that rifle only had a couple hundred rounds, NO high pressure loads, NEVER beat on the bolt handle as some suggested when I raised the issue up on another forum years back. Simply weak link in the 700, quality control was piss poor, and I have not bought a new mfg 700 since, and doubt I ever will.

Before 700 owners chime in, this was MY experience and for me, it was as sure as a 100% failure, for it was in my case. NOT acceptable, I need 100% reliability AND confidence.

Thanks for the info.

Stiller's shop is just a tad smaller than Remington's, and I dare say, a tad better on quality control. Have you ever heard of one of his bolt handles falling off? I have two friends who have had hunting rifles built on his Predator actions that are very happy with the result. They are both first class efforts with no compromises. I was at the range with both when they were breaking in barrels and looking for "the load". I am amazed that skinny barreled magnums can shoot so well. One was a .270 WSM and the other a 7mm WSM. Good luck with your project.

65BR,

I may be reading between the lines but you seem pretty passionate about the one piece bolt concept!

I own two custom Nesika Bay actions, one from Poulsbo and one from Sturgis) that have one piece bolts. Both are single shot NXP models and I am very pleased with each. Today I would hesitate to recommend dealing with Nesika or their parent company Dakota.

The man behind Nesika was Glenn Harrison and he is almost back into the action building business. This press release came out in early August Glenn Harrison and if you are patient you could find an answer coming out of Montana in a few months.

For the rest of your question I have fifteen years of outstanding results from Lilja barrels and Jewell triggers. My loading bench has a couple of empty 6.5x47 cases sitting on the back board. One is original and the second has been necked down to 6x47. Either would make an outstanding hunting rifle and the 6.5 has heavier bullets available. Right now I am leaning toward the 6x47 as a varmint rifle project.

I have NO qualms about QC at Stiller nor any knowledge of any problems, I AM considering their action and others. It seems MANY custom actions are patterned after Rem 700, a testimony to their accuracy potential/design, BUT Rem, Inc. YES is huge, and mass production is likely a culprit of defects in braze jobs, etc., but that said, IF given choice, all else equal, I would prefer a one piece bolt/handle. If I KNEW I would never have a problem w/a custom action patterned after a 700, I might move in that direction, but Rem's QC has me concerned about the design itself, surely not too bad considering how many have survived w/o failure, but WHOEVER experiences it, in a match OR in the field will likely be highly upset, I was and that was at the range, but I realized what it's repercussions could/would have been in the field. I think I would have wrapped it around a tree, and if I got it loose, shipped it back to Remington!

I might be one in a million, or 5 million, but I know it's happened to others, as I have heard of it more than a few times, and yes, ONLY Remington not any custom actions.

I have 99+ % confidence in say a Stiller, met him at the SHOT show, and emailed him recently, that said, I want 100% before I spend my hard earned dollars on something I want to build intending to keep and enjoy perhaps the rest of my life. Trying to 'get it right' the first time, so I hope you all can understand how my experiences tainted by a faulty Remington, clouds my thinking.

If by some strange bad coincidental karma I had a bolt handle fall off again, it would not be the end of the world mind you, but if I ever go elk hunting again, and took a rifle, and I would have no issue taking a good shooting 6.5 using proper bullets keeping ranges under say 300 yds) I would hate to blow the hunt and/or waste my time/effort and money spent on the hunt. Chances of that situation happening I imagine with any rifle ever would likely be less than getting struck by lightning, BUT I was struck once, just fortunately at the range when it happened.

Again, ANY comments re: accuracy of a Win 70 that is blue printed, as well as a L579 would be appreciated. It is justifiable for me to use a quality custom action as a foundation for a hunting rifle, but I want to be completely confident in it.

Let me ask, has anyone out there heard of ANY types of reliability problems with feeding, firing, extracting, ejecting with ANY custom action? Is there anything I need to know, or any brand you might shy away from to strive to ensure COMPLETE dependability in a hunting rifle? I realize Murphy's law, but I am trying to do my best to hedge against it, proactively.

Thanks again and I appreciate the replies and respect the knowledge of the shooters here. Have a great day all.

Kitsap, yes, passionate about my Rem bolt breakage problem and my desire to never experience another handle breakage, ever, BUT not turning my nose up or back on a 700 STYLE custom action, if I can be assured within reason they are SOLID, w/o being 1 piece. As to 6 vs 6.5, likely 6 would do 99.5% of what is needed, might be a bad angle or perhaps a big game hunt someday where I would want that extra .5mm and bullet weight that goes with it, energy/penetration, wound channel etc. Love the 6 for up to deer, but leaning to 6.5 for what it offers over and above, just in case I might want/need it in the field.

Catshooter, I can imagine the reaction when the competitor was forced, mid-shoot to quit! Can relate...that said I try to separate MY experience with a Remington with any other Rem styled action.

The results with those Win70, 1/4 to 1/3 moa is enough as I am not trying to win bench, but if spending good money expect to have very tight shooting gun to be happy.

Besides action choices, I guess TOTAL sum spent on a finished rifle is what I want to grasp, a Jewel trigger would be nice, not essential, but things like bottom metal and stock choices/work may come to more play as far as costs with custom vs Winchester etc for example.

Sure I am looking at 1200-1500 for a nice barreled Win or similar action put in a good stock, where as it goes up from there with custom depending.

If I build custom, I want TOP accuracy over and above Remington blue print as dependability I do not have to question, which a Winchester would give more than any Remington due to my experience. I just know if I ever go hunting in a remote area, having a handle break would make me more angry than a big bad grizzly! Fit to be tied if you can imagine;)

Thanks and love to hear from others, open to all opinions and experience regardless of where you stand in relation to my opinions/experience and comments.

Oh, as to that ammo consideration and the 260, really came to light today, my buddy called from airport at 630am, seems they would not let his 350 mag ammo, loaded with 225 partitions by me, go with him to Colorado on his elk hunt. His option now is buy 200gr factory Rem ammo in Colorado, which is not my top choice for elk-but I told him would do broadside lungs to 250-300 yds) or borrow another's rifle. SO yes, having factory ammo option leans to 260 vs x47 or 6BR, and as to the 708, love the round, but it comes back at me a tad more than I like when wanting to sit at the bench and punch paper or plink gongs/water jugs-etc; and barrel life considered as I won't be using it on prairie dogs, but again do like to punch paper and plink, can always rebarrel if needed but rather do it at 3-4k, not 2k. Thanks again.

Even worse yet, I never once prior or during that last shot when the handle just feel loose in my hand, ever beat the handle or had any hard bolt lift, not once. It was a stainless gun, the first 700 SYN/SS with blind mag, that was the basis on my 338/06, again new 1st owner, unfired when barreled up. Worse yet, Rem re-brazed it, and jeweled the bolt as that model was never done so at the plant, and the ROUGE/polishing GRIT was left slam full that had worked itself into the bolt, and it was never cleaned out. Talk about a quick way to ruin an expensive Hart barrel job! Cleaned it out as upon receiving it, when working the action it did not feel right and the grit prevented the firing pin from striking home, and yes I cleaned out the bbl just to make sure.

I can say, after it happened, I never trusted it again, sure the owner never had a problem, I hope not, never heard, but yes, mine was not the first, surely not the last.

Thanks. I guess at that time, ultimately QC was hit or miss, perhaps mine was on a Monday am production line, or Friday pm, as they say re: the auto industry.......

When the Lapua 6.5 X47 cases became available over here the mate built a 7 X 47 on an old Mauser action the VZ24 and put it into a handmade stock etc and shot well.
Anyway i was shooting my 30BR at 600 uards and we got to thinking maybe a 30X47L would be the go so we got an old palma Barrel for testing made a reamer and chambered and threaded to my L579 Sako and yes it shoots well but i don`t gain enough over the 30BR to warrant a change but it feeds well and would be a good hunting rifle was trying some 130 grain HP the otherday 3000fps no problem and accurate thats in a 14 twist barrel you could go to a 17 like the 30BR depending on the projectile you want to shoot.

Yeah, I have a 7BR at the moment, amazing, 2870fps with 120's in a 21" bbl. Shocked me. May shock some deer too! I killed a few in the past with a different load, worked fine, deer did not have a chronograph! Go figure! For me, a 7/08 is more than I need, BR is just too easy to enjoy shooting, less kick/blast.

Maybe I should just keep the BR loaded with 2015 and 120 ballistic tips and be done for a field gun as I may gain little in the field with a 65x47L at distances I normally hunt, need to run some numbers. Thanks and good hearing about your project. 30 BR has a following for certain types of shoots.

Guess I was one of the unlucky one's, anyone that had happen to me would think twice I believe, barring a bolt handle or extractor failure I do recognize there is a reason their design is copied often.

Put my deposit on a Stiller Predator, will see how it turns out.

I have a TAC300. You'll love the Predator!

No I have a safe full of Stillers Products----Predators both big and small, Pythons and a Viper. I have 1 Remmy left that Speedy printed but I quit wasting my money on Remmy's:nono: several years ago.

65BR,

This has been an excellent thread. I duly noted the part about a deposit on a Stiller Predator and definitely want to know how your project turns out.

Thanks,

Well I expect this custom action to be as good as any, and if I get a qood barrel chambered well, I hope to achieve under .4-.5 moa if not better if I can hold it. Will most likely do a 6.5x47 in heavy sporter contour for a hunting rifle at 23", 22 shortest likely 24 longest for handling. Muzzle with probably taper at .675-.700 and with good optics/loads, hoping for good things.

I will consider 260 Rem straigt, not AI, as if I ever got in a jam, I can get factory ammo, but that is not a huge concern since I load, besides I want to use that high quality brass for the '47' and I can seat bullets to not exceed oal and eat up powder space. Think it will be a nice rig.....8" twist, barrel undecided yet, and who will install it.

Be glad to have anyone chime in on smith's and installation costs, and no action truing needed of course).

Trigger recommendations? Timney, rifle basix, jewel? Thanks all.
