Accurate Shooter Article: Test of Factory action before and after "trueing"

I would like to see a test of a bone stock Remington action accuracy test before and after trueing.

I don't think anyone has ever done that.

I think that that would be a hard test as I believe that you usually need to do some chamber work after you chase the threads.

Not sure, as I am NOT A SMITH.

If an action truly needs work, would it (the BBL) not then need to be set back? Maybe those in the know will chime in.

I am not sure that all "tests" conducted by shooting magazines are "significant" by any stretch of the engineering or statistical imagination. Never really stopped anyone from doing them.

I am kind of surprised no one that does action trueing hasn't already done it and published the results to brag on how much better they shoot after a trueing.

It would be easy to do, just use a Criterion nut barrel. In fact you could use SEVERAL barrels and calibers on the same action. Just to make it interesting.

I have 11 custom rifles built on 700 actions. One was blueprinted when I got it and none of the others have been touched. All of them shoot great to excellent! The money I have saved by not blueprinting will more than pay for the one that eventually does not. These are not BR rifles but are LR plinking, steel, varmint rifles. A good barrel, chamber job, and adequate reloading skills are the key IMO.

I thought about getting these tools and just doing them myself from now on... I bet PTG would help with the article!!! Could serve to sell a lot of tools?

Urban, - Then why don't You be the one to step up and either do the test OR bankroll the test if you don't have the personal resources ??
I'm sure there are some good smiths who would be willing to take on the job. - You could purchase a "factory" Remington rifle (either new or used - your choice) and then you could do the test portion of the "before" and then send it and the barrel to the gunsmith along with the necessary funds and have him true the action up & if need be do a set-back & rechamber job on the barrel then perform the remaining test.

- I'm Very Sure that what you've spoken of has been carried out, many times in-fact. - Putting a "clear and tangible results gained" on it. - Not Possible - To Many variables and To Many individual sets of circumstances.

- That's Why many go the Custom action route. - Like one said "Buy a Bat" - (LOL)

Just so you know, because of your response I actually looked at the BAT Rem 700 footprint action. I think I like it better than the Kelbly. It certainly is on the Santa list.

Of course, my action choice really has nothing to do with it.

I would be more than happy to write an article and do the test. What does it pay??? :)

Hmmmmm - possibly piece of mind .............. or knowledge (priceless) gained.

The varmint hunter magazine used to have a bunch of Smith's advertising accurizing factory rifles and their 50% better accuracy guarantee. Missy of them would set the barrel back. Cost was around 250-300 bucks back in the mid 1990's

So you install a barrel on an untrued action and test fire. Now take it apart and true the action the threads will be undersized on the barrel. So what will you do at this point to keep a true comparison. In order to properly fit the barrel you will need to cut the tennon off and rethread, also the chamber will need to be recut or deepened so you have introduced several variables that could affect the results.
