Accurate Load for 30-378

I have a custom 30-378, 27" barrel and I'm shooting the 230g Berger Hybrid target bullets. I'm between using 50bmg and retumbo, I've shot a ladder with the 50bmg and about to do one more with retumbo, that being said, if I get similar results with the retumbo tomorrow, which powder should I stick with, have to make a decision to by more of one type because I'll be out after the ladder test tomorrow. Basically, I don't want to spend more money on two types of powders after ladder tests just to see which holds a group better. Should I just pick one and stick with it?

Any feedback on powders/loads for this caliber using the heavier bullets?

Thanks in advance
Joden

While not popular, my .30-378 shot best with 7828 and the heavier the bullets it seemed 7828 shot even better. I ended up shooting 230s after I used up all my 240 smks. While everyone loves Retumbo I saw better results with 7828 but have also seen lighter bullets in super mags (< 190 gr) usually shoot better with Retumbo.

My 100-200 yd target accuracy never got superb with any powders but the chrono results sure told another story. Sold off the super mag though. Sometimes I miss that boomer :'(

Hate to offer cartridge experience with results from a 3rd possible powder.

Yeah, I'm leaning towards the slower burning powders, plus, I hear you get higher velocities with the slower burining ones. So far my best results were with 50bmg but I haven't tested retumbo enough
Thanks

You might even try the New Reloader- 33 they have been getting some good results with it in the 338 lapua, I'm going to give it a try in my 308 Baer with 230 Burgers. IMR also makes a 7828 short cut.

I would give Reloader 33 a try. It has worked good in everything we tried it in. WE got more velocity and better 1000 yard groups. It is also cheaper. Good to see you finally joined Joe, welcome aboard. Matt

I would take a load for Reloader 25 or Retumbo and start there and go up a 1/2 grain at a time. I went up a grain at a time for my 338 Lapua Imp and saw a 50 feet per second rise. Watch for signs of pressure. It will let you know when you are getting there. Matt

No I recommended a starting point using the R25 or Retumbo load as a starting point because they are a faster powder and you should be safe to start with those for the Reloader 33. My buddy uses 111 grains of Reloader 33 in his 338-378 with the 300 grain. This should give you some kind of comparison. Matt

I have tun 208 Amax at 3450 with 50BMG
240 SMK at 3200
230 berger hybrid at 3320

Out of the 30-378 50 bmg is the best i have found i have shot it in 3 custom long barreled guns.

Also, how long were the barrels, guessing at least 30" with those velocities?

Thanks

How long were your barrels and how much powder used for the 230 berger??

I must be living in the dark age, I have no idea what a 30-378 is, I assume it's a 30 cal, but have no idea what 378 is

Just role with what springman says. His rifles have set a few records and he knows his stuff. If it was for 180's or lower I have all the data for anyone interested my friend did the load data for weatherby when they introduced the caliber I have a copy of all the records he submitted to them. They gave him a custom deluxe 460 for the info and used at least one load for there factory ammo.
