Accurate BR rifle for under $2700

I want to get into BR shooting although the rifle has to double as a long range varminter. I am looking at a savage LRPV right bolt left port as its components (6 once trigger, HS precision stock, heavy stainless barrel, target action) appeal to me. I have heard only good reports about this rifle. I am wondering if there is a better factory rifle out there for a similar price and quality. Is there? For my price range is it possible to custom build a rifle?
The savage can be ordered in 6mmbr norma in which has excellent accuracy. This is what im leaning towards.
(price excludes scope)
Thanks in advance

I love my savage f class in 6br. Although its a little heave to go packing around as a varmint gun unless you use a bench. It shoots great! tac driver. you could get one and then buy another stock and just swap when shooting varmin. you could even look for a used one for around 900. just my .02

I bought a Savage target action. Sent it to Kevin Rayhill at Stockade Gunstocks. He worked on the action, barrelled it with my custom contour, bedded it in one of his PDS stocks with accessory rail, mounted a Bushnell Elite 4200 tactical stock with shipping was well under your $2700. Like for that money I could buy full length sizer, brass, primers, powder, and bullet seater. Might even be able to get a bipod and sling.

This is my first build rifle and it shoots better than anything I've ever had my hands on. I'm completely stoked. There are others that I guess you could say specialize in Savages. Kevin is one. You should call and talk to all of them.

I haven't done any BR competition. I shoot for fun. It's usually one or two groups to get me happy with the days zero then I have fun. But the main function of the rifle is varmint hunting. I don't think my skill is where it needs to be to fully make use of this rifle as a BR rig, but I am down right NASTY on varmints.

I built a Savage from a lb/rp target action, a 28" Brux 8 twist heavy barrel, and a SSS dog tracker stock, all machine work including timing and truing the action and installing their evolution trigger chambering the barrel was done by SSS and I put it all together. With a Night Force 12-42 BBR on it and a Stockade bolt handle and a PTG bolt body I have spent right in your ball park money wise. I have just over 200 rounds through it now and its a .2 - .3 shooter with a best of .106". Five shot groups at 100. So yeah you can build one.

There's no way in 'ell I'd build a BR/Varmint gun for that kind of coin and base it on a Savage action.

My comment was to the original poster, but if the shoe fits....

The OP wanted a gun to shoot BR first and varmints second.

I've got two 1000 yard guns, light and heavy, both built to the exact recipe as gunamonth's, and without digging out the receipts, same ballpark price.

With a very little effort, there's some monster deals out there built on custom actions in the used market. On a new build and with the OP's budget, there's no reason to start with a Savage.

Yea but for $2800 you still can't shoot the thing. You've got no sights :P That's if you call a Bushnell a scope.

Heck ya if you've got the money build what you can. I got the best I could do. It's a varmint rifle. For a BR rig the custom actioned rigs like gunamonth and alf put together would be nice. Then you don't need to worry about being laughed off the line ;D

Take care,
Jeff

He wrote that the $2700 budget excludes optics. For that kind of coin I would go all out and not even consider the Savage.

If my budget was $1,000 to 1,500, the Savage would be a contender. But with that much money, I would go with almost the same stuff that gunamonth went with.

I agree. Sounds like you got your budget. Even if you went with a different action, like a stiller or panda or a pirece. Its a little cheaper than a bat.

I am also with Alf on this one. No Savage!! I personally just dont like them. They dont feel real to me. You can have a heck of a rig for the money your allowing yourself. Look at stiller actions. Predator actions are around 800 bucks. 300 for a barrel 100 for a trigger. 350 in a stock and around 500 to have it built. good luck! Lee

I bought a brand new Kelby Panda 6.5x47L, Krieger barrel, Jewell trigger for 2950 shipped.

Check the classifieds here or on benchrest central. Call Bob White at shooters corner.

No! There is not a better factory rifle out there for a similar price and quality... Yes! In your price range you can build a custom rifle...

I just built a 6mm Dasher and here is the break down. Action Savage target rblp $450.00, Barrel (5R rifling with 8.4 twist)$160.00, Choate stock $210.00, Machining $300.00, scope base $55.00, Scope 8-32x56 Sightron III $750.00+ all less than $2000.00. Shot in a ladder test .6 @ 300 meters for 6 shots during increments. I could have spent more but not received more. Holds same moa from 600yards out to 1000 yards in competition. A lot of shooters are disappointed that they spent so much more money and they didn't get concomitant results. Its not how much money you spent but how you shoot.

The only problem with those custom rifles is that most of the owners have been out shot one time or another by a Savage. You all know who you are. :D If I hurt anyone's feelings I apologize, but like I was told growing up "the truth hurts". ;D

If I were buying another rig, I would buy the Savage LRPV, put a Sightron S3 on it and use as is, or go all custom. Nothing in between. Nothing bad with either plan IMHO.

Donny

Seems you and I have shared some of the same life expieriences. ;D Gotta love them ugly guns.

i built a 6.5x47 on a Pierce action, Kreiger barrel, jewel trigger,Kelbly stock, rings and base for less than 2200.00 that will shoot in the low 2's and high 1's. Could have used a f class panda for 300 more, and would have save a ton on rings and base. that leaves more than enough for a weaver 36 power scope and be right around 2700....jim
