Accuracy of the 45 acp

Link,
Full disclosure, I'm a very serious Bullseye shooter with a slight long range Prairie dog obsession. I've ransom'd hundreds of various 45 loads out of 3 custom Bullseye 1911's. So I have a bit of experience with the 1911. A Ransom Rest will NOT outshoot a good handheld group, however it will be far more consistent over the course of testing multiple groups. It never gets tired.

1:
What bullet are you using, exactly? Best I can
2:
What accuracy are you getting for a 10 shot group? picture is 5 shots at 25 yd
Third:
What distance are you testing?
4:
What amount of crimp are you using? Exact measurement to .001 please..001 crimp as near as I can measure.
5:
Over all length. Mag length - 1.25"
6:
What brand of brass are you using, or is it a mixture? starline
7:
What is the bullet diameter of your lead bullets, again to the .001? .452 lead SWC over 4.2 of Bullseye.

A very well made 1911 can shoot well under 2" @ 50 yards with the right loads. Every one of my BE pistols will group well under that.

Forgot to ask, what type of accuracy are you expecting?

I might have to do some shooting with my new 45 to get use to it. The 22 holes are from my Mark I. Just for comparison. I hope I can get the 45 to shoot as accurate as the 22. Sorry it took this long to get to the range. All shots are free hand

If the ammunition is loaded to the gun, accuracy depends on the gun.

I don't care for Baers, Wilsons, Kimbers or other "high" end knockoffs. Working at a range, I saw too many of the super tight, "premium" production pistols malfunction. Changing the design is asking for trouble.

My suggestion for a new .45 ACP shooter would be to buy something like an RIA, adjust it until it performed correctly, then concentrate on finding the load it likes.

4.2 of BE with a good 200gr SWC is a very good load. 3.8-4.2 is a sweet spot with a variety of bullseye powders and the 200SWC.

From what I can see on the pic, it looks to be close to a 10" 5 shot group, is that correct or am I not reading it right? If so, WOW, some serious work needs to be done. When I first looked at the image I saw the 200 yard notation & was figuring that this guy doesn't need anything done.

You mentioned you're crimping about .001, I didn't phrase that question well. I was looking for the outside diameter at the mouth of the case after you've crimped it. .468-.470 should be the goal.

Brings up a few more questions.
Is the bushing to barrel fit, really sloppy?
Same question for the bushing to slide?
When the slide is forward, and you press on the rear of the barrel, is there a lot of movement? With that much verticle, your barrel lugs probably aren't fitted to the slide stop.
Are you shooting off bags or freehand.
If off bags, is the pistol resting on the slide, bottom of grip, or front of the trigger guard? And is placement consistent?

Sorry if these questions seem pretty basic, but it's really hard to try & diagnose without watching the shooter.

Probably more questions to follow.

Yes 10 inches of vertical. 25 yards
.470 crimped
The gun seems to be tight

This target was freehand I tried bottom of grip but got more vertical with the 22 and the 45. What's the best bag method?
