Accuracy of production rifle.

Sometimes I wonder, what is considered good accuracy for a production rifle (?) For example, I shot a 10 rounds into a 3/4 inch group at 100 yards this morning. Using a Winchester Heavy Varmint 308 , with Farrell base and rings and Nightforce 5.5-22×50 scope. Ammunition was Magtech 168 grain match ammo. Is this considered OK? Good? Outstanding?

For varmint or deer hunting, that group is "Dead Critter" every time.....For BR, that is a good starting point to start load development IMHO.

Most production claim 3 shots MOA at 100 yards. You are certainly better.

I have been reading rifle mags for 50+ years and they always rant and rave about 3 shot groups less than an inch regardless of the price of the rifle. Given that, your rifle is positioned to be a great hunting rifle given that criteria.

Tuning via reloads offers the potential for improved results. What is needed in terms of accuracy is defined by the distance you plan to shoot and your individual capabilities. I enjoy reloading for the purposes of increasing accuracy and thus the chance of success resulting in not only the greater chance of the desired harvest but also a reduction in simply wounding the animal leading to unnecessary suffering.

For a factory rifle shooting factory ammo - that is pretty darned good, I think. I'd say the rifle has even more potential if handloaded. They say factory ammo is pretty good these days - and I'd agree with that, though I've yet had a rifle that couldn't be made to shoot better with handloads. It would be very interesting to see what that rifle would do with some other brands of match factory ammo - if you could find it.

Great shooting and tight groups from factory ammo. Good handloads will probably narrow it down even more.

I have been shooting, a Factory ( Modif. with, new Trigger Spring ) Tikka T-3, SS, 24", .270 WSM into, 3/4 MOA ( 5 shot groups ) with, 140 gr. AccuBonds @ 3,145 FPS.
Just switched Bullets,.. I am now getting, Sub 1/2 MOA groups with, 140 Berger Classic Hunters at, 3,180 FPS.
Yup, Some, Factory Rifle's,.. "can" shoot !

I've found that 100 groups don't tell me a lot. Every rifle I own shoots within 1 MOA at 100 (standard 3 shot group). But I have a few that once they get out to 300 yards the groups open up, especially with factory ammo. That's why once I get shots on paper at 100 I move out to 200 for zero and see if the group holds together. Hunting deer I'm good to go from 50 yards to 300. It looks like you have a solid group. See what it does at 200 or 300 and if it still shoots 1 MOA you got a winner!

That is truly outstanding! I wish I had a factory rifle that would do that. IMO, not many will.

I agree, work loads, then move out to 300, zero rework loads keep zeroed at 300.

That's a good group, if you can do it all the time it's a great load for your rifle. It may change at longer ranges.
