Accuracy 6.5x47 Lapua — What Reamer Neck Diameter?

I’m considering getting a friend to build a 6.5x47L and I want to turn the necks to wring the most accuracy I can from it. We don’t have any experience with this cartridge. I would like to turn the necks as little as needed. Most likely I will use Lapua brass. We already have a reamer but will turn it down to give the preferred size tight-neck chamber. I’m looking for advice on the reamer neck diameter.

Pick your Brand of Brass, turn to "clean up" the Neck, load, a Bullet then, Mic it and ADD, .004 to .005 thousandths, to determine neck diameter. Too Tight of a Neck Dia., will give mucho Chamber Pressure and can cause,.. Problems !

We had a huge amount of issues with the 6.5 x 47 when it first came out due to the reamers spec'd by PTG. The original spec was .291 diameter for the reamer. If you weren't careful then you could run into pressure excursion issues. My later reamers reamers opened up the neck to .295 and that seemed to help the situation. Some of the recent brass has come in with thicker necks so beware if you try to no-turn.

I find no need to turn necks on a 6.5x47 Lapua..
I shoot 600 yd Midrange F-Class @ High Master.
It shoots light's out with the right barrel and loads.

Just checking here - you have a reamer, but plan on “turning it” to reduce the neck diameter? This sounds like a plan for failure, am I misunderstanding your post?

@dnellans, If you are misunderstanding then maybe I wasn’t clear. I’m talking about sending the reamer in to have the reamer neck OD modified so it will cut a chamber with a slightly reduced neck size. This is not a new thing, just semantics.

6shotsor5 The barrel im currently using is 28 inch Kreiger 4 grove with .170 free bore.
Shootin Berger 140 LRBT pushed with Varget.. it works for my combo
