6.5x47 neck?!

I am wanting to build a 6.5x47 for the 140s. My trouble is this, I am horrible and really have no idea on how to read a reamer print so I figured someone could tell me if this print would be a no turn neck 6.5x47 lapua. It’s a PT&G reamer. I hope you can read it well enough. Thank you in advance!

If Im reading that correct, it looks like the neck is .292. That will give you about .002 of clearance without turning - a little tight - would be perfect for my turned brass. My chamber is a no turn chamber and is .294 With ,004 of clearance.

Lapua brass is .013 (x2) + .264 = .290 (also confirmed with calipers). With an IDOD, I get necks perfectly clean at .011(x2) + .264 = .288, so that neck size would be perfect and give me .004 of clearance.

But I could totally be reading that wrong.

I was hoping that wasn’t the case. I really just want a no neck turn. I thought it had a .293 at the neck shoulder junction but I don’t think it is what I’m looking for.

It looks like it does have .293 at the neck shoulder junction but the mouth of the case is .292. When I measure a Lapua 139 factory cartridge, I get about .291 at the neck shoulder junction and .290 at the mouth so it looks like this chamber gives you .002. Thats definitively doable without neck turning and gives you the option of turning. However, I know that my chamber uses a JGS reamer and its designed with .004 of clearance.

I would call JGS and PT&G and ask them, also confirm our suspicion here on the neck. Maybe they have some in stock. However I can tell you that I bought a go/no go gauge from JGS for the 6.5x47 and I had to wait a few weeks because I called them before they started another production run. So you never know till you call I suppose.

^^^^ Got a JGS a few weeks ago, very similar to Josh's, it was on the shelf (CIP) and Go gauge , asked how long for a non CIP she said 4 Months.

Dave Manson has them in stock - just brought a CIP reamer and gauges last week, and at least with Manson Reamers you know they are always dimensionally correct

Just to add a little confusion to the question, here is a JGS CIP reamer print.

They do seem to be very similar in the neck area

that looks like the pic in the beginning of the thread. So it looks like their reamer has .002 of clearance. Can’t talk about that being good or bad. Mine has .004. I could see .002 giving you very little expansion and the ability to run both turned and non turned brass.

And if you get a run of brass that is .0135 thickness, that makes it really tight. For my use, I like to at least turn the necks enough to knock off the high spots.
Another thing that happens with use is that the brass will flow forward tightening up the necks. I would think if you started out at .004 clearance that would be good for the life of the brass

I agree with you - I think a no turn chamber in 6.5x47 is .294 at the mouth of the case.

It's a taper neck design .293 to .292.
You really should have some brass in-hand to review a reamer print.
Yes I believe I mentioned that in a previous post on this thread and measures a factory lapua cartridge with 139 scenars. I think this reamer design is tight but doable on non turned brass. Pretty much leaves .002 from the neck shoulder junction to the mouth of the case. But I agree with you. My next chamber will be a turn chamber and based solely on the measurements of my actual brass

Do yourself a favor and use either JGS or Manson for your supplier, as the dimensions of the reamer will actually match the print! And they will cut more than a few chambers before needing to be sharpened or reground to actually cut right! Learned this the hard way, as have many others.

I second that - the .004 reamer used in my build is from JGS and is dimensioned exactly as designed.
