Accubond Accuracy Issue

I shot IMR4350 in my 280 for years,and got along fine with Accubonds,and several other 140 grain bullets.If you're getting flat primers,there's something the rifle doesn't like about your load.Seating depth,powder charge or type are the first things I would work on,and a lower charge and trying to seat somewhere around .020 off the lands would be the first things I would do.I've seen rifles not like a certain bullet,and I've seen them not like a certain powder.

Helped my friend put together a 308 win with a carbon wrapped barrel......it hates accubonds.


What are you going do, barrels like what they like.

Thats a 33 nosler in a 6lb rifle. Groups start opening up after a couple. Shoulda waited for it to cool

Why not give Nosler's "accuracy load" with the 140 Accubond a try. 53gr Reloader-19.

As was already suggested, you might want to consider optimizing seating depth a little better in this particular case, prior to charge weight testing. One possibility is that you're just not seating the Accubonds anywhere near where they want to be seated. Berger has outlined a seating depth testing approach that covers a very wide range of seating depth, primarily aimed at helping shooters tune VLD bullets, which can sometimes be rather finicky with regard to seating depth:

VLD bullets are designed with a secant ogive. This ogive shape allows bullets to be more efficient in flight (retain more velocity = less drop and wind deflection). While this result is desirable for many rifle shooters the secant ogive on the VLD bullets produces another result in many rifle.

This test covers a sufficiently wide seating depth window that excessive pressure can sometimes be an issue with the test groups that have the longest jumps (i.e. least effective internal case volume). Nonetheless, you can choose a slightly reduced charge weight for the test that you know does not generate pressure issues for the rounds with the shortest COAL, and it should be fine for the rest. This test is aimed primarily at getting you to a particular seating depth region where a particular bullet shoots better than any of the other seating depth regions. Further fine tuning of seating depth within that region is still advisable. It may be worth a try in your case before giving up on the Accubonds.

I have had great luck with Remington brass in the 280, 140g accubond with 54g of 19.

Pass me the 160g, partition with IMR 7828....Hammer Of Thor on deer.

Accubonds shoot good in my SIL's 7 Rem Mag. Accubond LR's will not, even though the twist rate calculator says they should.

I am shooting the 9T, 280 AI and the 175g LRAB shoots tiny groups with top end loads of IMR 7828 and Fed 210, Lapua '06 brass. Stock Rem 7 Mags love the 175g LRAB.

The 140g Accubonds I have shot in the 280, 280 AI, and 7 Mag liked to just barely touch the lands, and shot small groups.

But the Accubond do not kill. They just knock the animal down, and I cut the neck veins and windpipe with my knife to finish them off.

Nos Bal tips knock them down and they are dead by the time I walk up to the animal.

I have the 110 grain Accubonds loaded in my 257 Wby this year for deer. My targets didn’t look quite as good as Dusty’s but they shot pretty good. I don’t expect the deer to go too far if I get a crack at a nice buck, I’ll probably at the very least bust a big doe for the freezer. Hopefully in the next couple of weeks I can supply a “ballistic report.”

My Remington 700 Mountain Rifle in .280 shoots groups just like that with 140 grain AB's over RL19 with a muzzle velocity around 2890. I seat them .001 off of the lands and they fit in the mag. I have shot this load out to 300 yards and it maintains .25 moa. I would suggest slowing it down also. From what I have found, if a rifle likes ballistic tips, it will shoot AB's also with some minor changes.

I'm with the fellows in Posts 13,14,& 15. I tried to get the Accubonds to shoot in both 6.5 and 30 cal a few years back. Bottom line is that the Sierra's WAY out shot them both at close (100yds) and 400yds was very discouraging. The accuracy difference I got was nearly identical to the difference you saw in the pictures on your first post. I just pitched the remainder of the bullets and was done with them. JME. WD

I tried long range accu-bonds in my 280AI. I had trouble with the seater leaving a heavy ring around the bullet nose to the point it was actually damaging the bullet. I had to get the "VLD stem for my seater die and that took care of that. It shot better, but really wasn't stellar until I hit the right powder {RL-22}, charge and seating depth.

I gave up on Accubonds in 338 Lapua. 7.9 grain variance in box of 50.

Most peoples problem with trying to get Accubonds to shoot is that they are loading them too hot using cup and core bullet data and not allowing enough jump to the lands. You can not use cup and core data with bonded bullets. In my experience with all bonded bullets they take less powder to reach the same pressure as more powder with cup and core bullets. You usually get the same velocity but with less powder. The Accubond also likes to jump a good ways to the lands. Nosler data says the max for your bullet is 52 grs IMR 4350.
