????? about primers

Been using Remington 61/2 primers in the 223 and 6BR..With H322..and have been getting some pressure issues..Even with the light loads..
One guy told me this is a magnum primer...Is this so..Said I would
be better off with CCI 400,which I also have on hand..The Rem.
box does not say magnum anything...What do you think ?? :o :o :o

It is the opposite of a magnum primer. It is meant for the Hornet and other small cartridges. Use the 7 1/2, CCI400 or stronger. The cup on the 6 1/2 is very thin.

Warning: Do not use 6 1/2 small rifle primers in high intensity cartridges such as the 17 Rem, 222 Rem, or the 223 Rem. Damage to your firearm or personal injury may result.

Taken from a box of Remington 6 1/2 primers.
It is not a magnum primer. It was developed for use in low pressure cartridges such as the 22 hornet.
Remington 7 1/2, CCI 400 or BR4, Wolf small rifle are all good choices for the 223.

The rem 6 1/2 SRP is NOT a magnum primer:

Warning: Remington does not recommend this primer for use in the 17 Remington, 222 Remington, 223 Remington, 204 Ruger, 17 Remington Fireball. Use the 7-1/2 Small Rifle Bench Rest primer in these cartridges.

# This 6-1/2 Small Rifle primer is primarily designed for use in the 22 Hornet.

did not see anything on the box I have of them....They seem to be ok with H 4895 powder...it is only with the H 322 that I see a problem...I figured it was just a bad mix of primer and powder..

What the others told you was spot on. If there is problem with one powder and not with another it is because of a difference in pressures of the loads. One more thing, you should discontinue taking advice from who ever told you that 6 1/2s were magnum primers, because that had to have been a pure guess, and is absolutely wrong.

Picked up a box of 6-1/2 primers when they were the only SRP on the shelves ANYWHERE.

Been shooting them in my .223 Bolt Action with no problems at all using loads within the ranges of charge weights published by the powder mfr's. In my view they're no more an issue for "normal" loads than the other primers are with "hot" loads. You just have to be conservative.

There are multiple factors involved in whether a primer is pierced by a given load in a particular rifle. He has told us that some of his loads pierce primers, and has not told us that those loads are hotter than the manuals recommend, so if they are not, what works for your rifle does not for his. IMO telling someone that they can disregard manufacturers recommendations is not the best practice, because of the great variety of possible circumstances of the potential readers.

basicly that is the same reason I got them..No others were on the shelf....But no where on the box does it say anything about for Hornet only or any other thing....Appreciate your information and advice..But like I said..The issues only appear with the H322 powder...That was what I was wondering about..

The writing is on the wall my friend. Advice to the contrary notwithstanding, because every rifle is unique, in the end it's your decision. If it were me, I'd rely on BoydAllen's advice and be done with it.

CCI 400 have the same cup thickness as 6 1/2 rems. 450's and 7.5's have the same cup size. I do agree on not using thinner cups unless its a hornet sized case. Go over to Saubier.com and there is a very good forum on smallcaliber load data on primer thickness and dia.

It's on the side of the box under WARNING
