A17 ammo speeds

Did some chrono work with the new CCI A17 .17 HMR ammo. It's advertised as being 100fps faster than standard 17 grain projectiles. I used a Magnetospeed chrono. Rifle is a factory CZ 453 Varmint barrel with no mods. Not as consistent as I expected but groups at 100 yds. were less than 1".

Bought some A17 off the interweb.. Wanted to try it out and see for myself.. I have been using Hornaday 17 grain. Took it to the range early this A.M. while the wind was down, as yesterday I was shooting pdawgs in a strong wind and every shot had to be wind compensated..

No I didn't chrono anything.. I shot off a concrete bench at 100 yds, using a Caldwell rest and a bag in the rear.. Results: The A17 shoots much tighter groups than the Hornaday. Consistant 5 shot 5/8" groups every time.. Mighta been tighter if my old eyes worked better. I have a problem with a blocked tear duct and watery eyes. Not to mention I am an offeecial geezer..

The Hornaday was not near as tight.. around 1" groups were the norm and more open. Just a point of interest, the point of impact for both was different.. Enough that I will need to re-zero when changing brands..

Rifle is a 455 CZ, with a 2-7 Leupold rimfire scope.

After shooting a few hunerrtt rounds in the field, I will stick to the Hornaday 17 gr Vmax. The A17 just doesn't seem to expand or kill as well as the Vmax.. Besides tha A17 comes in a cardboard box and I need to save the old plastic ammo boxes to put it in..

I did some test thru my Anschutz 1517 it was faster than they said. BUT they shot great six shots 100yrd cover with a quarter, lucky I guess. Had a friend shoot some thru is CZ it didn't like it. I only shot one jack with it, about 65yrds, I too don't think it open up, hump up like a lung shot deer, ran off, found a big blood circle. I'm taking them with me this next week on a PD choot, see what happens. I to won't buy them again.

Up date on the A17 ammo. It smoked lots of PD very well, made lots of head shot under 100yrd. But still on jacks it just doesn't open up, shot one 136yrd(RF) in the chest, few sec fell over. But it does choot very accurately in my 1517. I like to see what it does on a coyote.
