Team Lefse
A Twin Tale of Sorts..
This past Saturday was day long overdue. I had been looking forwards to this day for quite a few reasons.
1. Oldest daughter Sarah & I were to shoot in a Team Match.
2. I was going to finally get to shoot my 2nd F-Class build past 100 yards.
3. Finally get to use the girls rests I had made for them.
Saturday found Sarah and myself headed North to the Forks Rifle Club in Grand Forks ND to participate in the “Luck of the Draw†match, (3x15@600). The intent of this match was to pair new shooters with experienced shooters for teaching/mentoring & getting “first match†experiences. I had asked the Match Director if I could be paired with Sarah, even though she has several matches under her belt, this would be her first match setting up on the line by herself with her brand new Viper F-Class rest.
After a couple of years of having both of my daughters (Sarah & Sam) shoot several matches a year and having only one F-Class friendly rest, I needed to get another rest for them to use. I had mentioned this predicament to my friend Bob “The Viper†Pastor in passing and he said that when I was ready, he would love to make each of the girls their own individually personalized “Viper†rest. Bob has known both Sarah and Samantha since I lived in Michigan a decade ago when Bob got me sucked into the long range shooting games and had pretty much watched the girls grow from little kids into independent young women. So if I was going ever shoot in the same match with the girls, I would need to build another rifle and come up with 2 more F-Class rests that the girls could carry/set-up themselves.
So after many discussions with Bob regarding the girl’s interests & color likes/dislikes, etc.. I scored two Sinclair Rest bases with center columns & shipped them out for the “Viper†to work his lathe cave magic. After a couple of weeks wait, Bob called and said the rests are being shipped as we speak. I was pretty excited as a shooter and as a Father to finally see this idea come to life. I had wanted to give the girls something special they would enjoy & treasure throughout their lives. Most Fathers would probably get their daughters hope chests or other traditional family heirloom type gifts, I got my girls Viper Shooting Rests.. These Vigstol family heirlooms hold extra special meaning as they were designed and handcrafted by my great friend/shooting mentor & the girl’s Uncle Bob “The Viper†Pastor.
I am not going to go into fine details regarding the rests, just going to include a few pictures and let them tell the story. At the Luck of the Draw match, Sarah was able to shoot off hers for the first time, scoring higher each relay and actually beating dear old Dad in the last relay. She had things going her way that day, she was getting coached by a very accomplished shooter, Brian Suhr and she was shooting off of her very own Viper rest. Sarah’s Rest was powder-coated in a metallic rootbeer and black cherry colors with Owl emblems. Samantha’s Rest is in US Air Force colors & USAF/NDANG emblems, she has yet to shoot off if hers as she is currently serving in TX. It was a Great Day!!! Thank You Viper!!!
