A shout out to our great bullet makers

DSCF6017.JPG We shooters have become accustomed to having bullets that shoot in zeroes at 100 yards; less than an inch at 600 yards and less than 2 inches at 1000. Folks, this shows the amazing quality of the bullets that we shoot and the skill of those who make them. In the last decade we have lost many of our bullet makers. Among the ones that I knew, we have lost Ed Watson, Jef Fowler, Don Gentner, Phil Sauer, Lowell Hottenstein, Brady Knight, Skip Otto, and Del Bishop.

We have a new group of artisans who make (with pride) the projectiles that are setting records on a regular basis. When an average shooter like yours truly can shoot a group under an inch at 600 yards, we have great bullets. Thanks to all of those who manufacture these great bullets.

James, a packaged arrived yesterday from George Ulrich with my new die set to make 103 to 108 high BC 6mm bullets.

If I had some cores I could make up some.

Don't ya just love the creative ways people come up with to brag about a group? I did the same thing in the CFE thread ha

Next time you can do a shout out to the barrel makers, or the stock makers, or... :D

Seriously though, always feels good to walk up to your target and see something like that. Nice job

Bullets alone will not make for small groups. They are however the part of the total package that is easiest to change. If one has a sound platform (action, stock, and trigger) he can evaluate barrel quality if he has great bullets. I have shot many barrels and we are blessed with so many great ones. Not to say that there are not great barrels produced by button rifling, I have come to use more cut rifled barrels. Thinking back, I believe that my best barrel for short range BR was a Krieger 14 twist and for long range, most of my wins has been with two Bartleins (one a gain twist 8.25 to 7.75, and the other an 8 twist). On my 6 BRA, I am presently shooting a Lederer 8 twist and it may be as good as any I have tried. My newest barrel is a 7.83 twist Brux and is chambered in 6 Dasher. It is showing some real promise. With all of this said, I am truly grateful for our great barrel makers. PS- My first "zero" at 100 yards (1997) was shot with a Hart 14 twist in 6 PPC.

Slightly different twist, but I will always appreciate Randy Robinett's dedication to making the finest 30 cal bullets possible; they certainly carried me far back when, ya know. Also, Jef Fowler's 6mm 66's were great for group or whatever. We have been blessed by some very sharp, dedicated bullet makers over the years.

Does Charlie and Cheryl Hood make heavy cores?

I have 500 Sierra 1.140 jackets that George sent, surprisingly the 30 caliber cores I have are the correct weight to make a 105 grn 6mm. Just a “tad” too big in diameter.
George e-mailed and said he would send me some cores. You can bet I am anxious to shoot these.

I have 2 cases of J-4’s that are due in October. I need to call Charlie and see if he makes longer 6mm cores.

I still have my Wire cutter and squirt die from 20 years ago. If I could get wire, I could make some.

I agree with Joe. Randys 30cal 118s are really good

Bart said he's busy shooting matches and will get on them when he can concentrate on making
them the best he can. He's been working on them. 7mm 180g + - .
