A short rant about best cartridges

mikegaiz

Stay frosty, my friend.
I want to win at 1000 yds., so what cartridge should I shoot?

I read this forum all the time and like to shoot the winner cartridge like everyone else. ;D To find the magic case that will make me a winner. Granted that some cases are inherently more accurate then others and better at long ranges, but I digress. Has anyone else ever noticed that a good shooter seems win, no matter what case he is using? Maybe it's the shooter, his equipment and his processes that wins. Na, it's the case. Wait maybe it's not the case but, the equipment? What was he using? I love capitalism, Now I have an excuse to tell my wife, so I can justify buying more stuff. Remember the plane old 284 WIN. it is in vogue again. Maybe I should try a 6mm (which one?) or a 300, I can't decide? The more buzz about the winning case, the more that will start shooting it. The more that shoot it, the more records it sets. Wow what a concept. I'm waiting for the return of the 30-30 WIN. :'(

Actually, I think there are a few that are making inroads with a 30-30 set up as a benchrest cartridge...something about ideal capacity.
You are exactly right though. People trying to buy their way into the winners circle by using all the latest and greatest equipment and cartridges, when what is really needed is good equipment, good reloading practices and a LOT of trigger time

That pretty much sums it up. That holds true in just about any sport from auto racing to shotgun shooting.
I shot ATA trap for many years. There was always grumbling about making changes so that more people would have a chance to win. But there was nothing you could to change the winners, they would still win but with lower scores.

I guess that would depend on if you are shooting at an empty water bucket or a man riding away from you on a horse!

And, I thought it was a 120?

KMART I to shot a lot of years in the ATA . In all that time over 40 years i never seen a brand of gun/shell win.
Good shooters are made the same way good anything is made . It takes time-practice and a will to be better and lots of money . No one wins with money spent but blood and sweat will help .

I think the 6 Dasher seems to be the way to go?
as far as trap shooting goes i have shot alot of trap over the years and many trap league's..I have had a slew of trap shot guns and have even shot and won B class league with a sporting shotgun..but once a guy who was a great shooter let me shoot a high grade K-80 34" top single , ported with a soft touch stock and a release trigger..
i missed the first few birds then never missed one after that..I really think i could have won the grand with that gun..the only way you missed was if you had a brain fart..I have never forgot how that gun felt, i had considered takeing out a loan to buy one but really just too far out of my price range..but sometimes having the right equipment a fair shooter can shine.. I still want one..I thought if i sold all my rifles and shotguns i might be able to swing one..na i like my rifles to much.. I keep playing the lottery..lol...

markr pretty well nailed it there IMHO. Your chances of "buying" your way in are extemely slim.

The only 2 things I'd add is:
1) you have to have the right mindset, self disipline, focus, and NOT expect to just show up at the top right away. There is a learning curve.
2) A large portion of that learning curve is being able to shoot in varying conditions and under the pressure of competition. WD

If I were to start all over again....the big "do over"......if I were to give advice to my bestest buddy.......I would say go with a dasher or a BRX. Great case life. Great BBL life. Lots of quality brass...simple to make. Lots of load data out there. Low recoil. PROOVEN!!!

The only problem.....WAY TO MANY QUALITY 6MM BULLETS TO CHOOSE FROM!!! And, my friend, that isn't a bad problem to have!! ;)

That being said...I still shoot the 300 WBY some times. I still shoot the 300 WSM some times. I am going to tinker with a 6x47L this summer........but....if I HAD to shoot just one gun.....all the time.....DASHER!!

Good luck,
Tod Soeby

No one cartridge gets it. What are you tying to do? 1k Bench, Highpower prone, F class? With good shooters behind the buttplate, It comes down to equipment. And maybe a little luck.

After reading more topics on this forum, I changed my my mind. :o It is definitely the bullet. I'm thinking the Berger 6mm 105 VLD. Yea that's it, now I can justify buying a new Barrel. I don't have any 6mm barrels. Wait, which make? What kind did that guy shoot that just set the new 600 yd. record? That is the ticket.. :-*

This is the nature of all things, not just shooting. Want to be good at golf??? Get a new set of clubs. Want to be a pro snowboarder. Get the newest snowboard. Want to be like mike??? Better get those new Nike shoes. Want to shoot tight groups at 1000? Dasher or gtfo. It is fun to buy things and most people enjoy having nice things, but like most sports or hobbies equipment and practice are required.

'Taint the magic cartridge that makes a winner fella, it's called READING THE CONDITIONS and knowing the correction.
Give a "wind reader" a run of the mill rifle and he will kick the crap out of the non reader with superior equippment.
Tis true...........tis true. ;)

Ive got a savage scout in 308 (20 inchbbl) figure Ill practice with that till I get proficient then might build my first 1000 yd gun.By then my oldest son will be in college or moving out (he's 10). Then maybe a GAP hospitaller or Thunder ranch in 260rem or 6.5x47L . When I use the word proficient I mean on paper with a 6 lb gun with 2x pistol scope ...... It is fun though .Like these real competitors say all the time ITS THE DRIVER not the caliber. But Im sure if you are looking for a reason (explanation to wife) for a build or purchase you will find a plethora usable ones on this forum.

One needs to get a rifle in one of the myriad of calibers that are successful in the discipline that thay want to participate in...then, when they feel that the rifle they have is holding them back, go on to greener pastures...meaning a different rifle/caliber/ scope etc. Learn to provide your rifle with good competitive ammo, learn how to shoot your discipline properly, then go on and get what everybody else tells you that you need.
