A "Re-Done" Bayou Rifles

As many of you know, the 1000 yard firing berm at Bayou Rifles was a "muddy nightmare" even in "humid / dew" conditions, let alone rain. In the rain, you got so much mud on your boots you looked like you had snowshoes on! Well thanks to Don Diffey (Whatsthediff on here) who is the new L/R match director at Bayou, he has forged ahead and got the firing berm re-done. At considerable expense and frustration, he managed to get the berm done in under 1 week. I went and "christened" it today, practicing at 1000 yards. Dare I say that we now have reached "premium status" as far as ranges go? They dug out the old "mess" and scraped it smooth. Then they laid down some heavy crushed concrete and "pounded" that in. Then they put down a small grain (as in 1/4 to 1/3 inch) gravel and smoothed it over. Lastly, albeit not as of yet completed, will be laid down some astro turf. They also extended the angle of the berm so walking up is a bit longer but not as steep.

I am going to see if I can get Don to parlay a few photos up here of the "before and after" of the undertaking. So now when we have the new Lapua Regional and our Texas State L/R Championship, you can come on down knowing you are shooting at one of the best ranges around! Give Don an "atta boy" on here if you can! He full well deserves it! Remember, he is "Whatsthediff"!

These were linked with the e-mail that was sent out. Don, I'm sure much planning and effort went into this and your hard work is appreciated. I cant wait to test it out at the next match.

Looks beautiful! So let's say the cold winter months are getting kinda old for a certain guy from Fargo, ND (tonite's low -19, yeah that a negative sign), and his students just went on Spring Break and he did something crazy like drive down there to warm up a bit. Any chance to help break that berm in? Just say'n...

Come on down! The temps are fine even if the winds are HOWLING like they are right now! Must be 20+M.P.H. out there! But you will thaw out! LOL!!!

In ND we know howling and cold. The last sanctioned match of the year we shot with 40+ mph gusts (fishtailing headwinds, no less).

In all seriousness, I put alot of miles on this summer driving around to matches. I see alot of familiar names and talent associated with Bayou on this site. Would be an adventure to meet everyone. I really would like to make the trip. If the match was this weekend, I would have left already. I am planning on a trip there this year. Keep an eye out for me, I take this as a standing invite. Drew

Looks very nice. I've only been there once last fall but have made plans to come back 2 weekends for this year (so far). Very nice range, well run match, and a great group of shooters. Looking forward to it!!!

I'm on my way to Fargo and points north on Monday, and I will bring some warm weather for you. But since I'm leaving Friday, the respite will be short. Sorry.

Whooooaaaaa!

A roof... faaaaaanceeeeee.

Let me tell you a story about the roof.

We didn't have one until about 2007. In October of 2008, just a couple of weeks before we were to host the TSRA long range, we had a visit from hurricane Ike. You guessed it, it took the roof out and threw it in the parking lot. Ike came in from the south as a cat 1 or some such and that would have been ok since the woods should have sheltered the firing line from the south. Unfortunately the eye of Ike passed to the east of the range, moving more or less along I-45 and the eyewall winds hit the range coming from due north, which is how the range is oriented and they took off the cover, with a vengeance.

We rebuilt but much stronger this time. The posts were wood before, they are now steel. We were in dire need of a makeover on the line and I can't wait for next week to try it out. A big "well done" to Don Diffey.

Well we have the TSRA L/R coming up shortly and the Lapua L/R Regional not too far off either! C'mon over for a visit!

I'm in.......Gonna be a good time!........ ;) :) 8)

Jade, so far, from what I can see, there is going to be the best group of F-T/R shooters anywhere going to be at the TSRA and the Lapua Regional! Watch and see just where you guys place next to the F-Open shooters. I bet you are not "just on our heels", there is a reasonable chance, in many cases, to overtake us! I think it is GREAT!
