A question on wildcats.

Is there a list where many known wild cats are listed?

I one day want to get a gun built and there are certain requirements I think I want the cartridge to meet. I was thinking I would try to learn to wildcat but this cartridge might already exist.

It's anybody's guess as to the number of wildcats out there, but I'm sure it's 4 and maybe even 5 digits. The chances are that whatever you have in mind has been tried before, more than once. But don't let that stop you. Design your own and have your own reamer ground. Name it anything you want, all the good names have probably been taken too). After all, that's why they're called wildcats.

BTW, sites like Ammo Guide are not free. It's a very good source of info though. There are others out there equally as good. Most reamer makers will be happy to work with you and may even be able to furnish a chamber print after you give them your requirements. Many shooting forums have a seperate section devoted to wildcats.

Now, don't keep us waiting. What do you have in mind?

Hi Jon,

One of the better resources is the set of books from P. O. Ackley. They are somewhat dated by todays standards, but they are still a valuable read. You should be able to get them from the folks at Brownells.

Cordially,
Bob Blaine

I want to have 2 guns made up.

The second gun I wanted as a light walking rifle rather than a competion gun.

I wanted a much more than accurate light walking gun that was very versitle, *jack of all trades but not the best at anything gun*. A huge amount of power would not be needed for the area that I would hike with it, Ranch Country.

It looks like what I want exists. I rejected that 6mm223 since it could not accept long bullets. I think the 6mm Whisper loaded supersonic is what I want.

For my walking gun I was picturing this based on a rifle that was built as a youth rifle, or I thought a Remington Model 7, or the remote possiblity of an accurized Mini-14 with only the 5 shot magazine ever being used. I am not expecting to be attacked by hordes or roadrunners.

For this gun I want it to be petite but accurate and have some potential for distance. My requirements for the cartridge was that it be able to use magazines built for .223 and not require any bolt modifications.

I also want to get a rifle built to start learning benchrest shooting but I have no experiance except for playing on my own with a rifle that is not good enough.

From what I am reading I guess the good starting place for this is the 6mmBR.

A friend has done 23 wildcats in 15 years,by his count, I've only known him for about 6) and roughly half were junk. The other half were as good or better than factory and he claims one was exceptional. That one was like #18. He discarded it and moved on. I guess it's all about the process, not the result.

I've a few ideas myself. Usually they involve fast spherical powders and the near-perfect case capacity for one/two bullets and one/two powders. That's a lot of money to expend on so few possibilities but one day I hope to do it.

Good luck in all your endeavors. -Rod-

Try the 6.5mm MPC.A canidate for the new AR-15 and SAW round.Go to http://www.sskindustries.com/6_5mpc.htm for more info.Its a .223 nacked up to 6.5 .

I think one of the satisfactions of trying something like this if I ever do is it can force me to learn in an applied way.

I am guessing that many cartridge designs are done as a matter of fit. What I mean is get a cartridges to fit a firearm size to meet a certain goal as efficiently has possible within the mechanical constraints of the gun design. All things are compromises in one way or another.

If I were to try and and it fail, at least I would have learned alot of things in the process.
