A Piece Of History.

A fellow shooter brought a “grab bag” of stuff from a recently deceased 90 year old Veteran to our annual club meeting today at Tomball.
I found this in the bottom, a M-1 Garand clip loaded with FMJ 30/06 with a LC 54 head stamp, sealed primers, which probably means they are vintage.

I assume that is Lake City, 1954.

I would like to think that this clip was getting ready to be shipped to Korea, but the cease fire of hostilities delayed the shipment.

Just a piece of history to set on my fireplace mantel.image.jpg

I've been looking for a single shot clip for an M1 Garand. Shot a Garand match this last Saturday. Somebody loaned me one for the slow fire prone and standing stages of the match. Had no idea they existed. Very handy. Unfortunately they appear to be unobtainium. Did find the 2 and 5 round clips. Those and of course the 8 round clips are readily available. That was my first Garand match. What an educational experience!

I think there's a YouTube video on how to convert an 8-shot enbloc clip to hold just 1 round. I could be wrong, but if there isn't, do a Google search and see what turns up. Good luck

That might actually be a recycled WW2 clip. Post war had dashes added
and I see none. All reloaded and shipped to another engagement......

Screen shot if interested......

That stuff will go through a 12'' water oak.. A neighbor gave me some 55-60 years back. Decided to shoot some through a M70.. Hung a target on an oak down in the river bottom. After a few shots checked the target and discovered every shot had gone through the tree.. Careful what you hide behind, lol.

Single loading enhancement device… (SLED). May help your search.
Yeah, I used all terms. Found the sites that have them listed but everything is out of stock. Converting an 8 shot to a single shot sounds interesting. I'll search that out.

If people have not had a chance to own or at least shoot a Garand they are missing out. What a hoot. The 30-06 loads are not hot rodded. They are built to meet a very specific pressure lest they bend the op rod. The gas operated action really tames down the venerable 30-06. I had not shot one in over 50 years since my father owned one in my youth. He carried one in Korea and my cousin tells me that he set a record at Fort Ord during basic with an M1 that was eventually tied. The names were still displayed when he went through basic. The old man was a good shot.

If you have a dremel with a cut off wheel, and a clip to copy, you can make a SLED. I have made quite a few. I will check to see if I have any extra, but don't think so.

Yeah, I found a video on it. I've got some 8 round clips on order, 1 or 2 of them will be sacrifices to create sleds.

Funny seeing this, I just gave my neighbor a couple dozen clips for a brand new Garand he bought.

I have a SLED that I bought a few decades ago when I first got my Garand. It was my entrance into Highpower Rifle. Lots of clubs ran matches back then using the ammo that the DCM provided. We used to drive from NJ to Easton, PA to shoot in a match at Easton Fish and Game Assoc. They'd charge $15 for each shooter, and give you a zip lock with 64 rounds of ammo, eight full clips. You needed 50 for the match, and the rest got shot as sighters. Then we'd pick up the brass and clips to take home. We all joined the club for $15/year because we felt like we owed them.

If you enjoy shooting your Garand in those matches, and they're OK with you using handloads, load up some with the Speer 125TNT bullet. Works great, shoots great, and doesn't knock you out of position as much.

Wasn't going to post this but considering recent political events brought my family back into focus.

Dad survived WWII Hurtgen battle and the Bulge. He wouldn't talk about it except how dang cold that year was to his Va. mnts upbringing.... it was a record cold winter. Never did get over the frostbite.

Even when pressed by me and my brother, the ONLY thing he'd talk about was how much RESPECT he had for the prisoners. He always said their craftsmanship was second to none. He brought these back. Made by prisoners.
