The past couple of days have been “twist off and shoot” weather! The moderate temps of late is cause for me to grab a rifle of choice and hit our private range to burn a little powder and send some lead down range.
So a couple of days ago I grabbed one of my favorite rifles and calibers, a Remington 722 in .257 Roberts, and fired off several rounds to double check the sight in.
I am one of those anal people who keeps all of my rifles and pistols sighted in well at designated ranges. Scope sighted rifles bore holes 1.5 inches high at 100 yards whereas open sight firearms cut good groups at 50 yards. Although these ranges are definitely not considered sight ins for long range shooting, I rarely engage shots past 175 yards with scoped rifles and 100 yards with open sight anymore.
40 years ago, decades before the long range rage began, my brother and I were heavily invested in extended range shots, often accomplishing hunting shots exceeding 500 yards with a couple out to 868 and 846 yards. We have our shots recorded in field notes as a reminder of earlier times in our hunting endeavors. But now I prefer to keep the shots close and consistent.
Thus I do love my open sight guns and shoot them as much as those topped with glass.
Hope others are basking in the mild weather of late as I feel winter is not done with us yet! Wishing for all a great week and good times afield!

Nice rifle Butch!

My grandpa was a product of the depression. He had two rifles, a 22 mag to butcher farm animals with and a sporterized 06 with a Williams peep. He was blessed with great eye sight all of his life and some of the shots he made with that rifle were a testament to the accuracy of a good peep sight In the right hands.

I’ve been looking for a 722 in 257R, just waiting for the right one to cross my path.
