a new one to me

a friend wanted some help setting up his die's ,270 win nickel cases, one was run through the resizing die and trimmed . that case was then put into chamber ,the bolt would not close , I believe that it was shot in that gun , so what it was resized .then a brass case was used that was shot in that gun, resized and tried ,bolt closed no problem . I don't know if the dies were SB thinking it really should not matter. only thing I can think is the die was made wrong

A few suggestions (not that I know anything, but this is what I would do).

Resize again and try. If no go - mark the case and see where it's touching - anneal and repeat.

Measure all dimensions on both cases, at least one- most likely the length, will be different and the reason it wont chamber

I run nickel and brass(same cartridge) in several rifles from 17 rem to 338wm, have not had to adjust the die switching brass types. I don't mix them loading and always clean the nickel cases. First thing does a non resized nickel case chamber, then will it chamber after sizing. If not measure overall length.

nickel is not new to me . I suspect i'll have to find someone that loads for 270 ,try their die.

Know someone with a borescope? Insert in the muzzle end, as your trying to chamber a nickel plated case, and take a look!

Are you trying to chamber a reloaded round or trying the empty but resized case?

Frank

If the SB die was adjusted and used on both cases and then trimmed and case mouth chamfered and the nickle case would not allow bolt closing, but brass one did, then you need to trim the nickle case a tad more, it would seem.

Confirm if the nickel case was actually fired in the chamber you’re trying to fit it in.

Assuming it was, was it tight on extraction, would it rechamber before sizing?

I have tried resizing nickel case fire in other chambers hand it seems more difficult, like there is more spring back after sizing. And it never hurts to check neck thickness.

I'd measure the over-all length to make sure the case hasn't grown in length. I have also had necks of the brass become non-concentric with the body when I preparing some new brass and the bolt closed hard. They looked fine, but resizing took care of it.

Take the offending piece brass and run it up into the die. Don't lower the ram. Look under the die between the shell holder and the bottom of the die.

Is there space between the two? If there is then turn in your die more. Your press is flexing and the case is not being sized all the way. 99% of reloaders have never tried this. Some presses flex WAY more than others. But just be careful as you can really over size the brass doing this.
