A moment of panic with ptg 700 cocking piece

bought a couple of ptg benchrest cocking pieces to reduce the cock on closing on a new 700. after struggling with removing the factory pin and having to 'hammer/tap' the factory piece off the firing pin, then force fitting the pin back into the ptg piece, i was on high alert.

closed the bolt on an empty chamber, no trigger action and worse, the bolt would rotate open but not retract. removed action from stock... connector and sear looked ok. wth? pin would not fall, bolt would not retract.

turns out the ptg machine work on the part left a burr on the side of the engagement ramp which was dragging on the raceway. stoned the sides of the ramp and everything freed up. i wondered if i raised the burr with the heavy handed reassembly, but the second part had one also. FYI.

When the cocking piece and the firing pin are 2 separate pieces, the fit between the 2 should be and needs to be tight. Any slack between the 2 pieces is not desirable. What you have described as "heavy handed" should be the norm, as in use you want the firing pin/cocking piece to act as one piece, not a sloppy assembly. Blame PT&Gs' neglect for not manufacturing a burr free part, or maybe yourself for not closely examining an aftermarket part before using it. It is called "gunsmithing", not drop in.

understood. i have read your previous posts on the subject and went in knowing that could be an issue. i quickly tested indent on a couple of cci lr primed empty brass on the assumption the cci were some of the hardest cups. I am headed to the range today to check if es/sd has increased on known loads. This rifle really took a snap to close.. i have the before numbers somewhere and i will post before/after measurements which 'should' relate to the ptg advertised 0.030" relief. thx

firing pin travel to the stop: factory 0.288", ptg benchrest cocking piece 0.269". not quite the advertised 0.030" but measurements may be imprecise. cock on closing is now a manageable 0.025". factory spring still installed. before the swap i had to retract the bolt slightly to get the trigger to reset.
