A-Max? Pros and Cons.

I was thinking of shooting 105 amax bullets because they are cheaper than others. Let me know what you guys think of them good or bad. I know it depends if my gun likes them or not. But if they are good enough to try then i will. Any input is good

JOSH.
i have been shooting the 52gn amax in my .22br on fox and they kill as clean as a 50-55vmax.they are devastating on crows and rabbits out to 200-250yds.i dont shoot benchrest so as a target bullet i cant say but on paper for fun they are very accurate and consistant.in fact this week with all the bad weather over here in the uk i went out for a few hours on a nearby farm i found an old watering can in the scrap pile and put it out at 300yds i just sat there for 20 mins and put 12 rounds of the 52amax into it there wasnt much can left after that it shredded the can pretty good.

Hi Josh,

we have just started trying the 105 A-max for varminting. We haven't had the opportunity to do a lot of varminting with them yet, but we did shoot a magpie (bird that is about 4 inches wide and 10-12 inches tall) at 276yrds from a 6BR doing 2990 fps and it was very effective, I would say the damage was about equal with a 55grn V-max from a .223 over the same distance.

We are going to do a more testing for F-class as we may switch from the sierra 107 to the 105 A-max if it proves just as consistent in competition.

Josh,

the 105gn A-Max works very well in some barrels - a 6BR took the 1,000yd small group record only a few years ago using this bullet above H4895.

However, there are marginal variations in bullet and barrel dimensions that make a lot of difference in the sixes and seem to affect results more than in some calibres.

My 6BR with a Border barrel just won't shoot these bullets well and it performs at its best with Bergers, then Lapuas, then Sierras in that order. A friend's 6BR gives best results with the 105 A-Max.

So, don't go out and buy 1,000 or so on the basis of any post here - buy 100, try a few combinations with the usual favoured Varget etc loads and see how you get on with them. If they shoot really well great, and you save a bit of money. If they don't perform, you won't end up with 900 bullets that you have to swap or sell at a loss.

Just finished a fireforming session with my 6AI using 105 AMax molys, RL22, Win brass and primers. Put 5 into 1/2 inch at 100 metres (110 yds). Not too shabby for a fireforming load.

After fireforming, chronos at 3250 fps out of a 30 inch 8 twist MacLennon barrel in the Summer but velocity would be lower on a cold Winter day while fireforming.

In my barrel, the 105 AMax is more accurate than the 105 Bergers. Have always used 107 MKings for F Class competition but will give the AMax 105s a try next Summer.

My fireforming sessions are always 1950`s style "buy and shoot" - unsorted brass and bullets. So I suppose the implication is that once more refined methods are used after fireforming the groups will shrink even further.

To be honest I have never been a bullet sorter. More of a velocity freak. Minimal brass prep is the extent of my attention to detail. When the wind is blowing at 1000 yards, I have never seen much difference between "max prep" and "min prep". The guy who wins has read the wind changes correctly.

All my 6's shoot the 105 A-max very well on paper, and where I like em the most, on critters large and small at any sane distance !!!!!!!

105 Amax is the best and only 6mm VLD style bullet for varminting. It will expand better than any of the other VLD bullets. They are pleanty accurate for me. I go through about 1000 per year. The only down side is it seems then run them in batches some times they are everywhere and other times you have to buy the molly coated ones because they are all thats left!

I was flat addicted to 105 A-max's out of my Benchmark 6BR, 1:8, 25". Then, as Lance says the supply dried up. I haven't seen a 105 A-max on a shelf for months here in Eastern PA. So now I'm trying to get happy with 107 SMK's.

I'm going out tomorrow with 100 SMK's over 29 grains of Varget and CCI primers. It's more a shoot for a buddy that's never shot anything but an air rifle and can't imagine hitting a soda can at 200yds. He'll be buying a 6BR soon!

Take care,
Jeff

I just bought 500 from Wideners two days ago. The website and computer inventory showed 0 but I asked the clerk to go back and look he found 18 boxes. I purchased 5 boxes. Try them out. http://www.wideners.com/

Josh Amax are very consistent on bearing surface so tells my customers . I was on the phone with a guy shoots 1000yd and 600yd.He said box of 100 will not vary more than .001 thous. The only draw back they are not the best b.c.and they shoot better out of his gun at 600yd. then 1000yds . Hope this helps . mike
