Try being married to a professional interior designer (as in architecture, not decorating). My opinion only matters because I am the one installing, maintaining, and paying for it.
On one hand, it is good because she can see past the surface and see potential of things, on the other EVERYTHING has to work together, and a single change (like a backsplash) turns into a compete remod.
My only saving grace is her dad (who is a great guy) is not handy at all, so she doesn't know what can and can't be done without my input. Allows me to pull out the engineer's trick of overcomplicating the job if I don't like/want it. She'll then get it quoted by a contactor and quickly drop it.
