A Load for 223 Rem VV N550

I am not sure why, but I have 6# of VV N 550. It has a little more energy/unit weight in joules than N 150,about 3900 compared to 3700). They burn similarly, but the 550 gives more sppe to the bullet. Since I am stuck with these three jars of powder...anyone had any experience with N 550 with 223 Rem or am I just wasting my time?

I do not have a load for VV550 as it seem a little slow for most 223 Rem. I shoot a lot of VV540 with the heavier bullets and achieve good accuracy and velocity. I do not see why you could not use VV550, but it does not appear to be the best powder for this application. I will check with some of my shooting buddies to see if any have tried it. What will you be shooting it in?

About the only people I've seen using 550 in a .223 are using it behind 80 and 90gr VLDs in 26"+ barrels... the longer 'push' helps eak out every last fps possible.

I will use 68 to 80 gr bullets.

I use N-550 exclusively in my loads for NRA Highpower and Long Range. I use molyed Hornady 75 gr bullets, the BTHP 0.030" off the lands at 100-300 yards and the A-Max 0.020" off at 500-1000. In Krieger, Broughton and Border barrels with Krieger, CLE and Holloger 90 chambers, 26 gr N-550,adjusted upward as the throat erodes) in WW or LC brass and a WSR primer produce ~2930 fps at less than maximum pressure. This isn't a hot load and worked with multiple lots of all components, but should be worked up. I can produce the same velocity with 25 gr RL-15, but at higher pressure with faster barrel wear. With the long throat of the Holliger chamber, these loads are only slightly compressed,I use a funnel with a 6" drop tube).
