A Little Quick-Load Help??

I don't have this program -- yet, and I would like to ask someone who does if they could check out a load combination for me.

I'm working with my 22 BR, and would like to use IMR 4320, which I realize is not an optimum powder for this cartridge. But I happen to have a lot of it, and am pretty high up on the "tight wad scale".

I've actually already used some, carefully working up with no signs of excessive pressure. Fire formed a bunch of cases with it, and accuracy was pretty fair. I just would like to know where I stand with pressure, velocity, -- safety, and such.

The maximum amount of this powder that will fit in my case is 32.5 gr. with a drop tube.

Other stats are:

.22 BR Remington
Brass formed from 7 BR (Rem Brand) and 6 BR (Lapua Brand)
Speer 52 gr. HP Flat Base
CCI 450 Primer
OAL 1.980" (just touching lands)
Twist: 1/14, 20" bbl

I shot five, five shot groups at 32 grains under 40 gr. Nosler seconds, with all groups printing sub MOA. I thought not too bad for fire form rounds, but for all I know they might be pooping along at 2000 fps. I'd appreciate knowing where I'm standing with this powder.

If I'm outa line by asking, just let me know. jd

JDS, without knowing your actual case volume, H2O capacity and using your OAL, I would back that charge off some. Remember QL is a ball park prediction and the better the info going in, the better the info that comes out. That being said and using the programs default settings, at 32.0 Gr's of IMR-4320, your running approx. 58,884 psi. If you drop down a grain to 31, you'll be running approx. 52,840 psi and should be getting approx. 3300fps. If your actual case volume is less than 36.0 Gr's of H20, I would back down even further. Remember also the default temp setting is 70" F. so the hotter the temperature, the higher the pressure. Back'er down to about 30Gr's and work up slowly and my advice would be don't exceed 31.5 Gr's. Good Luck and be safe.

Chuckhunter my friend, I really appreciate your response.

I just hopped out the laboratory and checked a few cases for water weight, and it comes in at 36.4 on these remingtons. Haven't checked the Lapua yet.

You've told me pretty much what I wanted to know. Or even exactly what I want to know, but not quite what I wanted to hear. The pressure you listed seems higher than I would have expected, but I'd rather work with your information than my expectations.

Seems like this powder might work pretty well for me and be worth the time to figure out a few good loads.

Thanks very much. jd

JDS, I ran the numbers again with the 52 Gr Speer HP and your actual case volume of 36.2 as well as your OAL of 1.980. Also ran the temp. up to 85" and it appears that you should be O.K at 32.0 Gr's of IMR 4320. Pressures at that setting should be running, just over 57,000 PSI. I would still start at 31 Gr's and work up carefully in .2 Gr. increments. At 32Gr's you should be in the vicinity of 3450 Fps. Hope the powder works out for you. Good Luck and keep em all in the ten ring.
