a little OT: removing rust from a neglected ring gear

bringing an atv back from the brink. bought used and rear drive (not a differential) turned out to be dry. have case separated and ring and pinion removed. not going to pour a lot of money into the bike so salvaging what i can. gear teeth and bearing surfaces look 'good'. what i am trying to avoid is rust breaking loose and turning the gear oil into an abrasive slurry.

i know someone here knows what to do. thanks.

Phosphoric acid will remove the rust.

I soaked a bunch of bolts in ammonia and vinegar and man it brought all that junk off of them they were still wore out but they look brand new clean.
