A little 308 help please

Guys
I'm considering buying a 308 prefit for my Origin action. It's for strictly a range toy that will be shot 99% of the time @200Y.

I have a pretty decent stockpile of SMKs, from 150 to 175. Also Varget and 4064. So, I was thinking a 1-10 twist. Also a 28" length (bull) but I'm open to suggestions.

Please, if possible try to keep this on 308 subject matter. I'm not open to going 30BR, 6BR or the likes.

Thanks VERY much!

At 200yds the 150s will be plenty. Varget should push them OK as well. I had a 308 shilen on my origin a while, shot well. You could also look for a savage take off to save money if you're just looking for a informal trigger time gun to use components.

I should have been more clear. I have a Remington 700P that pretty much fills what your describing.
The Remmy shoots an Avg of .7"s at 200Y. Was looking for something a tad better.

Gotcha. I would think that a nice 308 with the 150s or 155s would fit the bill. The NSS shilen select or criterion barrels have great history. UrbanRifleman is offering a 308 match barrel in the classified section that might work for you. My 308 with 168s normally prints in the.3s at 100 and the .5s at 200.

I think if you wanted to spend money on bullets, the berger 115s in a 308 would be an absolute killer flat round at 200 max.

I think I would give Urbanriflemans match chambered 308 barrel a try also. I think he wrote in his thread about it he could finish to 26" but I may be wrong. Call him as he is great to talk with. I like 168's with 4064 and I also have a great load with TAC I worked up as its one of the cheapest and available powders usually. 10 or 11 twist with that bullet range should be good. Mine is a 24", for a range gun I do not mind the longer barrel but I cant speak from a competitive view point. I just shoot for fun as well.

5R rifling is worth seeing out, too. Uncle Sugar spent a bunch of tax dollars confirming the benefits of such. Something to think about…

I have a 13T zero freebore 308. Hunting with 150-155s, plinking with whatever is light and handy. Getting 1/2” or so with Berger 115s at 160 yards. Virtually no recoil.

A 10 twist 26" will work well for what you want and the components you have on hand. You will be fine for that 99% of the time at 200 but will also be able to shoot to 1000+ for that other 1% of the time. ;)

PVA does a great job on prefits. I have one they did on my .308 on a TL3 action in the pic below. Highly recommend them.

Not sure if you know or not but you can use TL3 prefits on the Origin also if you use the Hunts Long Range lug. Well worth the $35 if you have both or just can find TL3 prefits.

I definitely would not go very slow twist or as long as you suggested. 24" is more than enough length and the 11 twist would be ideal for the bullets you have mentioned. Although there is nothing wrong with a 10 either. Then down the road the rifle is capable of much more than 200 yards.

I shot the 308 Win for years, 10" twist. For my rifles, Varget and IMR 4064 were outstandingly excellent powders for 125, 150 and 165 grain bullets. Sierra bullets were my top performers but good luck finding them today.

If, as you stated, the rifle is intended for recreational range shooting, I would opt for a 24 to 26" semi-varmint contour barrel with 10" twist for shooting 125 or 150 grain bullets. Personally, I prefer the lighter bullets in in this caliper to keep the recoil tolerable for sustained shooting. The heavier barrel will also help for recoil reduction and control of the rifle.

The stock selection is also extremely important. I would select one that is very stable (stiff) with a bedding block system and designed to free float the barrel.

10 twist is faster than 11.
