A flyer in every group?

Hi all, I've been trying to get my 25-06 to group....I shoot 4 shot groups and on very group I get a flyer 2 to 3 inches off....I know there is shooter error and I'm old, but the same on every group?....3 of the shots are MOA or less, but there is always one, just one flyer..It may be the first shot or the last shot....That part changes....I'm shooting the same batch of powder, H4831sc and the same batch of bullets, 110gr ELD-X....It's a browning bolt with a Shilen barrel...I had the Shilen barrel put on, because when I bought the rifle it had a Boss....Any ideas??........Thanks

I've had that issue go away after retorquing the action screws before.

My Browning Bolt rifles all have factory bedding. I am wondering if somehow, the integrity of the bedding was compromised / changed when the new barrel was installed. The random nature of the flyers seems to point to a bedding issue and / or bolt torque issue like mentioned in post #3.

It was rebeded when barrel was installed...I am going to put some bluing on it to verify....And check the bolt torque......This one has really got me buffaloed...Thanks, will be checking the bedding and action torque

I bought a 308 from a friend, complete with Leupold fixed power scope. He said it has shot 1-3/8ish moa for many years and he’s tried a number of bullets and powders. Sure enough, nothing I tried would shrink the groups - and the groups always had fliers. That’s a hard group size to live with on a long range hunting rifle.

So I sold it to another friend. Very shortly after buying it, one of the internal lenses in the scope fell over sideways. It had litterally been fired enough to unscrew the keeper holding the lens - that loose lens flopping around caused fliers for years if not a decade, and as soon as the scope was replaced it shot well under moa.

Sometimes scope base screws have a relief in the barrel threads when originally drilled - the new barrel may be keeping overly long screws from firmly holding the front base in place.

I‘d grip the barrel firmly and try to unscrew it - more than one barrel has left a shop assumed to be tight, but wasn’t.

If the rifle is properly bedded and scope is good more than likely it usually points to bullet or powder.
I have had this happen to me many times in the past and I will try a different bullet and/or a different powder. I have always found a combo where flyers would be eliminated.

Thanks, something else to try...I have got some great ideas and I appreciate them all...

I had a rifle, very accurate, sub 1/2 moa, all of sudden the POI started shifting. I immediately suspected the scope, so I changed out the scope to test my suspicions and sure enough, it was the scope. It was one of Bushnell's high end Elite series scopes.

Still puzzles me because this was a low recoil rifle (223 Rem bolt rifle, heavy varmint barrel) and not subjected to rough usage or continuous dial up and down. But it nevertheless went bad. Go figure that one out.

I was thinking about switching from h4831 to imr 4350...I originally tried Barnes bullets, but I got no where with those...I couldn't get close to a group.....Now with the eld-x I'm shooting moa or less on some groups, but still have a flyer....I've been messing with rifles and reloading for 60 years and I have never seen this....And yes, I'm old, LOL

Excellent on loose barrel find.
