According to a local gun store, 70% of gun sales are to first time buyers and it's been that way for a while. Most likely these new buyers are concerned for their safety based on what they have seen and are not coming from a background of familiarity with firearms. The local shop encourages all of them to get training.

This is an interesting development. We are likely seeing gun owner ranks increase with people that have moderate and liberal mindset. It is contingent on us to bring them into the fold and help teach them gun safety and help them get training.

Also, I always find this interesting. we all know the 5.56mm/.223 round is wimpy. Really only a good choice for varmints. Most of our hunting rifles are much more powerful. However, many people consider the AR scary, and it worked to keep the mob away that day.

Nothing wimpy about a .223 regardless of the platform. It'll kill a human as effectively as any big bore rifle. Better yet, it'll deter the mob when that little wimpy bullet folds several of the front liners. Easy to control and in the right platform, many follow-up rounds. Sure there are many that lunch bigger holes and hit harder but for two legged critters, not necessary. How many PD officers, Deputies or troopers carry big bore rifles. By and large there's an AR in their vehicles.

Taking a one day safety course and then bringing your brand new weapon home, whereupon you then place it in a lock box and hide it in the closet, never again to see it until confronted by an intruder, is a disaster waiting for the time of need.

The average police officer in this country attends a two week retraining course once a year. One day of re qualification at the range. Really this training does little or nothing, to insure that the officer will act properly under stress. I've been there and done that. What you see brother officers do under stress is sometimes worse than what is witnessed here.

I know it bugles the mind of folks who handle firearms regularly, and especially those who are instructors. But then most instructors are ingrained to observe every incident with an eye towards correctness, and can't help critiquing these incidents.

While these two folks made a lot of mistakes, I admire their spunk. Right now, they are America's hero's, in the eyes of most of us.

The Media is causing all of this. They show film clips day after day after day of “peaceful protests’ turning into riots, with massive property destruction. No wonder people are worried and scared of the protestors. So now they make a big deal about two frightened home owners trying to protect themselves and their property because they’re armed. (2 against 100....wonder why?)
Why don’t they ever discuss a solution for the day to day “black on black” crimes that occur in every city across the country? No mention of MS 13 and those killings? Because it doesn’t fit their agenda! They are simply trying to inflame the public on both sides.
Granted, those McClosky folks need training. I applaud them for what they did. I would have reacted the same way! Maybe I would have “filmed” better with a muzzle down presentation but the Media wouldn’t care. The story would have run the same. “Rich armed white folk threaten poor protestors”!

I was in a gun store the other day here in California, two people can in to purchase firearm. They had no idea that there was a waiting period and that you needed a firearm safety certificate. They must have been a first time buyer. You just wonder what was they purpose to purchase a firearm and if they knew how to safely operate a weapon.. nilebartram

I disagree. The .223/5.56mm is indeed wimpy. It lacks stopping power. It's advantage is that people who aren't good at shooting can still shoot it well, humans are deterred by how it looks, and simply being shot at is enough in many situations. It works adequately in the way law enforcement and the military employ it. However, it's not the only weapon on the battlefield, and a self defense situation is a different game all together.

Law enforcement and the military don't use big bores because they are designed for hunting dangerous game. Small bores from 6mm to 30 Cal are a better fit and have superior stopping power to the 5.56/.223.

However, again, the point is that AR platform has a huge deterrent effect in a defense situation. Much more so than say an M-1 Garand, yet the Garand is much more powerful. What is needed in a self defense situation like the McCloskey's faced is for the mob to be deterred, and the AR platform is good at deterring people.

For those unfamiliar, Kim Gardner has refused to prosecute any of the rioters. She has also published a list of police officers she considers unreliable and will not accept any referrals from them, and it is a very long list.
Strange times, and glad I don't have to enter the city often. I do miss the occasional hockey game but we will survive.

Agree with the OP. Seems like it would be better for the lady to have the AR and not the handgun. Handguns aren't the easiest thing to shoot accurately. Even at 7 yards, it's hard to hit what you think you're aiming at.

Those folks need a lesson on muzzle awareness! It's not a pointer, like some use on a blackboard, it's a shooter. What would the consequences have been for these folks if, unintentionally, one of those guns was fired and one of the protesters hurt or killed (because of the lack of muzzle awareness)?

This was my first thought. I'm not a trained high speed low drag operator or anything remotely close, but my first thought was why did the woman leave the McMansion's high ground to wave a dinky pistol in peoples faces? In seconds she could be swamped by a crowd and find that dinky gun stuck up someplace uncomfortable. And then what? Hubby empties the magazine into crowd of how many? And then?
This episode could have gone horribly bad in a heartbeat. Owning a gun and using it responsibly is the first order for all of us.

Compare what a 338 Lapua will do a 20 feet... Dead is dead regardless of bullet size. a shot in the chest with a 223 V-max is certain death. The wound channel is huge and bone fragments are as lethal as the bullet..

Chances are good that a 338 Lapua would just punch through leaving a clean hole. What determines a cartridge's wimpyness level is it's stopping power. They all will cause death, even a 22LR.

I don't want to be shot by anything, but I'd much rather be hit by a standard military 5.56mm round than any typical deer hunting rifle. I once asked an ER nurse friend about gunshot wounds. Most of what he has seen were wounds from handgun and military rounds. Many were survivable. I asked him if he has seen any from hunting rifles.

He said very few, but there was always an incredible amount of damage. A hit in the leg or shoulder is often fatal from a hunting rifle.

But all this is beside the point. The number one goal of a defensive weapon in a mob situation is to scare the mob so they will not attack you. An AR platform does that better than any thing else.

Everyone buying a firearm isn't on our side, I'm sorry to say. Everyone who bought a firearm during the Obama years wasn't on our side, (America's) either. There were millions upon millions of guns sold during the Obama years and they are still out there, and many of the people who have them don't know how to use them and that scare's the crap out of me almost as much as the bad guys.

To think that these people who are the money behind this problem we are dealing with now haven't trained or hired some of their people on how to use firearms when they are ready to do so would be very stupid on our part. The morons on the street are lucky to not pee on their own shoes much less orchestrate an insurgency. We have not seen the ones who can shoot a 1,000+ yards just as well as any of us yet and i hope we don't ever reach that point.

When you are forced to do battle you had better have considered every aspect of what you are about to do before doing so, there will be plenty of unplanned things pop up during it to be taken care of without not planning ahead.

This is simply a test to see if the time is right for the next step. Those who want to take our nation from us aren't going anywhere, except perhaps to congress as we are seeing now. (And they are just the mouth pieces for their puppet masters)

These are just observations from my having lived through the riots of the 60's, 70's, 90's and now. Nothing has changed, this isn't new. That's why i said it's just a test, it's happened before and if "they" don't get it now they will be back again in the future to try again.
