A colonoscopy adventure

We in the medical field have "other names" for the colon prep solutions. Considering the public nature of this fine site they shall remain nameless.

Feel free to PM me the "Other names" i`m always up for a good chuckle.............

The way to drink that stuff is with a straw. Just power it down. Make sure you are sitting on the can though.

I had mine done this summer. Happy that they told me to not come back for 10 years. As part of the post-procedure chat, they told me to avoid driving and to not make any big decisions for 24 hours due to the anesthetic. My wife chuckled and took me to three car dealerships before "we" decided on a Mustang GT convertible. I love the car, but it was just another example that my wife is evil, pure evil.

I dreaded mine also.

But after seeing my Father in Law go through Colon Cancer, I totally changed my thoughts on this procedure. I was in the room when the doctor told my FIL if he had his colostomy as recommended, he wouldn't have cancer. All was OK until his intestines busted and again almost killed him.

Now, especially after having 2 polyps removed, I still don't like it, BUT I hope never to go through what my FIL went through.

GET the procedure done, might save you a lot of grief one day.

Dennis

PS: Still about the OP post, thanks for the serious laugh.

Call your local septic tank people and have a rooter done. Might hurt, might be less than sterile, but it's cheaper.

What hideous memories you invoked. Not once but twice I had it done.

Cruel. This was cruel and I am now the worse for reading it.

I'll be there Friday morning. I feel like a frightened young virgin before senior prom.

Ok, here's my report:
Is it a fun process? No. But I will say that it's nowhere as bad as I'd feared. Basically painless. For all the 40+ year old people here who are reading all these horror stories...fear not.

Last year I lost a friend to colon cancer. Before passing away he made me promise to get a colonoscopy done. Nuff said.

Wow!! Twice in the same day.

I have two personal friends that ended up with a punctured colon from this procedure. One ended up very near death. Makes me awefully apprehensive about having it done in the next 5 years.

I've had 3 or 4 now at the ripe old age of 60, doc says my back side like to grow those polyps, had 3 large ones removed just last year and needed some stitches as well so I got to sit inside and do nothing for a week. Just got a letter from the doc saying it's that time again. Hate the prep work involved, but the meds they give for sleep is great. I just wish they would let me sleep longer after the procedure.

Don't be afraid of the procedure, just the prep work. I prefer the pills method best, no taste to make it all worse. LOL

Too many people dwell on the preparation for and the procedure itself and not the benefits of having the colonoscopy. It is a great feeling to find out that you have a clean bill of health. You can be like me and know that I should get one but put it off for years and when you finally get one you find out you have stage 3 colon cancer and go through 6 months of chemotherapy, all that could have been easily avoided. I made it through all that and it has been 12 years since I completed my treatment. After what I went through several of my friends decided to get colonoscopies and one of them who was a very close shooting friend found out he also had stage 3 colon cancer. After a year of tough treatment he finally passed away and I sure do miss him. My wife and children have had and will continue to have their colonoscopy when they are due. It is a personal decision on whether to get one but remember your decision can be a life saving one.

I just turned 50 and had my first colon adventure. Mine was at 3:30pm so I had a long time with no food so I tried chicken broth which reminded me of almost drowning in the ocean as a kid, horrible salt water. Got some great advice from the lady in the pharmacy; instead of using the flavor packet they give you use Crystal Light lemonade mix. I put in enough to make 1.5 gallons and it tasted like sugary lemonade. Next time I will use a little less. Also drink it thru a straw so you don't have to smell it. I didn't have a problem with that though. Keep it in the refrigerator, it kind of kills the taste. I had one small pollup, glad I got it done.

I know a lot of us make fun of the procedure, my self included. When it come to "where the sun don't shine" it just seems to go that way especially when the prep solution is involved. But with all the joking aside I'm sure we all realize the importance of getting the procedure done.

About 35 years ago my mother had some pre cancerous colon problems. After that he was really good for the first 15-20 years about having colonoscopies done at pretty close intervals. But after so many years of no problems at all she decided she didn't like getting them done so she stopped. So fast forward 15 years after her last colonoscopy. She changed doctors and he made her get one done. My mother was diagnosed with inoperable stage 4 colon cancer a year and a half ago. Taking care of her and watching her go through the hell of chemo for a year is beyond humbling. She was lucky enough in September to go into remission but the ravages of chemo are still there and the doctor says the cancer will come back sooner or later. The chemo probably bought her a few years but regular colonoscopies would have prevented all of it. When the time comes for my next one I'm sure I'll bitch, moan and complain about it and make some bad jokes about where the sun don't shine, but I'll sure as hell get it done!

So if anyone is on the fence just talk to anyone who has had colon cancer or someone like me who has seen it first hand and you'll be glad you got done.

Wishing all you survivors out there the best of health!

I don't see how you get the whole jug down in an hour through a straw. It's all I can do gulping like a thirsty camel.

One thing is true, when you drink that much cold liquid in a short time it lowers your core temperature and gives you chills even in a very warm room. Weird.
