A case for the .750 tenon on a RFBR rifle

I have another question. What about bore curve ? Is any barrel absolutely perfectly straight? Is it possible to counter barrel droop by indexing the barrel? I'm asking because I don't know. I started shooting .22's again a couple years ago because I thought it would be less complicated. I guess it's a matter of what your trying to accomplish.

Mike, respectfully, I've not asked questions, but posted resources that factually prove some of his comments as incorrect concerning bbl droop and bullet deformation qualification. Tony's a hell of a guy and shooter but the info is out there to all of us that wish to better understand this aspect of the discussion.

Often there is no real need in knowing how what we do, does what it does. But when that turns to unqualified and just incorrect information on the web, it just confuses things for everyone.

Art belongs in museums. We should all focus on the actual science and/or physics behind what we want to better understand.

Or...just shoot and do what works! Either way is good.

I posted the links. I think anyone remotely interested, should read the article and play with the program a bit.

Mike,

I read your information and think I understand most of it. I see your point about stiffness, and must admit it was eye opening. Perhaps I have worried about bullet deformation in the barrel more than I should. But for now, I will still stay with wanting the crown to be at the tightest round place in the barrel.

I think this information about the larger barrels is most applicable to unlimited rail guns, rather than RFBR guns or for any type of "for score" shooting.

I don't think it is your intent to say RFBR actions need to have larger tenon holes to improve rimfire accuracy.

What I was saying is we started with large tenon holes and moved away from them to fit straight profile barrels. If you disagree, I yield the floor to you.

I think we have gotten off track, and have now gone from the sublime to the ridiculous. We are talking about barrels sizes no one in RFBR shoots, with lengths unsupportable by the actions we use. We have guys that think somehow I was saying tenon size wins matches, others saying he just isn't buying it. Hell, there was never anything for sale. No one paid any money that I know of. I never got my cut.

I confess I got this off track before by not wanting to go into the whole barrel thing because I was hoping MB would share his thinking on big tenon barrels but he didn't, and we went off on a tangent, tempers flared, and nothing was learned.

We all love this sport, and we are too few as it is, we all need to get along.

I value your opinion so please correct me if I'm wrong.

Tony, this is truly one of those, “I could hug your neck” moments. The bottom line is, I don’t disagree with you and I’d love to be able to dive more deeply into the details....as I believe I stated before, I love sharing this stuff. Also, I hate the ridiculous stuff and never enjoy being sideways with anyone, I actually lose sleep over it.

So, with that, I apologize things went where they did.

Bullet deformation is a very real thing and I don’t think there’s a time not to worry about it as long as things are kept within functional perspective. I don’t see droop as a large contributor as much as I see bore features parallel to the centerline of the bullet being of greater consequence. I’m at the end of a flight now, finally getting back home, but I’d like to revisit this within the next couple days.

Thanks Tony,
MB

Thank you Tony....You're always a class act, my friend. And yes, I think we agree as I really have no strong opinion on tenon size.

Isn't that program cool? It really puts a lot of what is likely a majority of beliefs, to rest. I often get questions about tuner weight for big barrels. IME, the truth is not what we'd think. In fact, a truly stiff bbl actually takes LESS weight to tune. Go figure.

Thank you for all you do for the sport, Tony!
