A Bit of Nostalgia

I remember my first center fire rifle I was allowed to buy , a '94 Winchester 30/30 + soft case + 60 rounds WW Silvertips . $89.00.
My first Sako L61R Finnbear 25/06 Standard Grade $299.00. I could not afford a scope or mounts for about another 6 months, that was circa 1976. Dupont 4831 was $5.95 LB & Rem 9-1/2 Primers were $0.85/100.

I then bought a SMLE MK4 + 100 Rnds Military Ammo $18.00.

Mike.

And--- if you're gonna use old school powder, you should probably use an old school powder measure.

And sometimes it's necessary to go into the archives for data.

Need a press too.

I used some old Remington 22 ammo on some prairie dogs yesterday. 10- 50 round boxes of their "new" Golden Bullet in the brick. The brick was $8 at a Big R hardware store -and Big R isn't the cheapest place in town. I'd like to get some more at that price. Wouldn't we all!

I vividly remember going to woolworths and buying Winchester wildcats for 3.00 per brick of 500 rounds. We usually bought 2 each and burned them all in one day.

What you are talking about is inflation and it is the way the politicians are going to get the 7 trillion we have in savings!

I hate to be a dooms dayer, but just wait till the day after the dollar is not longer the international currency.

I bought my 1st CF rifle while still in high school in 1968 - NIB M70 Sporter in 243 for $123. Paid the same dealer about $30 for a used Weaver K4, then bought a new RCBS JR press, dies, RWS Sinoxid primers (250 per box), Speer 80gr PSP, surplus H4831 ($.80/lb out of 125lb cardboard kegs), and 100pcs of used 243 brass w/mixed headstamps. I was in hog heaven - figured I had the best prairie dog & coyote rifle and ammo available. I probably wasn't getting much more than 2850fps out of those bullets with 4831, but the combination shot really well, and since no one I knew had a chronograph, I could claim 3000fps and go merrily on my way.

Circa 1960 I bought a NIB Smith & Wesson Model K-38 Target Masterpiece Revolver Model 14 for about 80 bucks. I should have bought more than one; and I should have kept the one I did buy. :'(

Bought my RCBS Jr and related basics in 1978. Paid it off in savings by 1983, and all I shot was 222 and 308. I remember when total cost of a relaod was in the 12 cent range.

Here's my first centerfire rifle reloader. Note the price markdown.

The rifle was a Ruger M-77, 243 Win., which cost me $175 brand new from Ranch Wholesale. (Big R) That was in 1974, when I graduated from high school. The guy threw in two boxes of shells which provided me with the brass to get started. My new rifle was the sporter barrel with sights, since it took me a few months to get a Weaver K-4 for it. With that rifle, scope, and Lee Loader, I shot groups that rival most anything I do these days. I'm thinkin maybe young eyes are better. ::) jd
