A big thanks to Dusty Stevens

bubba deer 2014.jpg When you reach a certain age, it is more important to pass along the love of hunting than it is to kill a trophy buck. I have reached that age. Pictured below is one of my grandsons with his first deer. This was taken several years ago and he shot it with my 6 PPC. He is now 15 and a sophomore in high school. After this, I bought him a .243 (Ruger American). It has accounted for one more deer. Another grandson is in college and I gave him my custom Mauser/Shilen in .243 when he was a lot younger. I guess that I will eventually get all of my grandsons a .243.

I was painting one a day back then. I got burned out but everybody had one so that made me happy. Once scoville stocks came out i decided everybody should be lucky enough to have one of those so i didnt have to paint anymore borden tree trunks or use 3lb of bondo to fill the holes in a hall stock. Theres where the rest was history. I still see a lot of my old paint jobs at the matches and in the classifieds. Also get people from time to time ask if i have any touch up paint for a stock i painted back in 1998.

My brother owns a gun shop in Bossier City and during the holidays he asked me if I had any use for a Remington 700 barreled action in .243. Since I have three young grandsons who are becoming interested in deer hunting, I answered yes. He said he was tired of seeing lie around the shop. Well he gave it to me during the holidays and I began looking for a stock. I contacted several friends and they did not have anything. Then I asked Dusty if he had a wooden 700 ADL SA stock. He answered that he did not have a wooden one but he did have a synthetic one that I could have. Today, I received a brand new Remington stock along with the hardware for the magazine.

I put all of the parts together and added a Vortex 3x-9x scope that I had lying around. I plan to give the rifle to them this afternoon and I am sure that there will be three happy youngsters. The oldest has one deer to his credit already. Thanks a lot Dusty. James
Update: Recently, I asked the father of those three grandsons how many deer had been killed with that .243. Surprisingly, he said that the three boys along with some cousins (who borrowed it) had killed approximately 15 deer. The old reclaimed 700 has been put to great use. The grandsons are 13, 11, and 9 years old. The boys thank you for your generous gift. JamesDSCI0108.JPG

Every time I take a ride out west and pass the 20-mile bend powerplant and know the lights are on and the A/C runs at home I think about Dusty. GE and FPL might have got it done without him but I doubt it. Now that FPL has put all the lines underground we have power all the time. the landscaper next door thought it a good Idea to plant bamboo right under the power lines and the power was out all the time. Now its all good.
