A big thanks to Dusty Stevens

My brother owns a gun shop in Bossier City and during the holidays he asked me if I had any use for a Remington 700 barreled action in .243. Since I have three young grandsons who are becoming interested in deer hunting, I answered yes. He said he was tired of seeing lie around the shop. Well he gave it to me during the holidays and I began looking for a stock. I contacted several friends and they did not have anything. Then I asked Dusty if he had a wooden 700 ADL SA stock. He answered that he did not have a wooden one but he did have a synthetic one that I could have. Today, I received a brand new Remington stock along with the hardware for the magazine.

I put all of the parts together and added a Vortex 3x-9x scope that I had lying around. I plan to give the rifle to them this afternoon and I am sure that there will be three happy youngsters. The oldest has one deer to his credit already. Thanks a lot Dusty. James

+1 for getting the grandkiddos involved, +2 for Dusty's assistance, +3 on the 243 Win.

I know with all the noise about the 6.5 Creedmore the 243 isn't getting much love but let me tell it was my first center fire rifle in the late 60's, a Winchester Model 70. I put a 3 x 9 Redfield scope on it. I hunted a lot of varmints (groundhogs), predators (foxes - no coyotes in my area in those days) and lots of white tail deer. It never failed me even with standard Remington factory ammo.

When I started reloading several years later the 243 really began to shine accuracy wise. The Sierra 85 BTHP with IMR 4350 proved to be an extremely accurate combo with excellent terminal performance - even on deer if you kept the shot broadside behind the shoulder. Never lost a deer to the 243.

Having one all purpose rifle with one all purpose load was a great beginning for me. I learned the rifle / load combo well, became confident and became a really good field shooter. The low recoil also was an advantage since I was a new shooter.

50 years later I'm still shooting the 243 Win - have four of them. Still using the Sierra 85 BTHP. The 243 should serve the kiddos well - it certainly served me well and still does.

Nice, paying it forward,AND...planting seeds. Thanks for the shout out Mr Mock, shows the character and backbone of the forum.

I'm with K22,love a good .243 and Sierra 85 BTHP with 4350.
